GPS Navigation Systems have come a long way

Gps systems have come a long way in view of the fact that they were first designed for the US millitary. The first signal from NAVSTAR 1 was received on Feb. 22, 1978. NAVSTAR 1 was launched from Vandenberg Air Break down Base in California and was the first of 24 satellites that make up the Comprehensive Positioning System (GPS). The first generation of satellites that make up the Comprehensive Positioning Systems 24 satellites were launched between Feb. 22, 1978 and Oct. 9, 1985. The Comprehensive Positioning System’s constellation of orbiting satellites is managed by the United States Air Break down 50th Space Wing. Currently 31 of the 34 GPS satellites in orbit transmit navigation and timing signals to civilian and military users around the world.

Gps for civilian use

The civilian GPS system wasn’t everlastingly as it is today and the US military is still keeping the most accurate Comprehensive Positioning Systems available classified for national security. But GPS upgrades for two new civilian signals to enhanced user accuracy and reliability, particularly with respect to aviation safety were plotted in 1998. The ground segment’s provide command and control of the satellites and generates the navigation message for satellites to broadcast to the users GPS device to calculate their earth’s position. The new Gps satellites contain new high-powered, anti-jam military-code, along with other accuracy, reliability, and data integrity improvements for both civil and military users. This modernized version of the world’s greatest free helpfulness was designed to ensure the US has the most precise and secure positioning, navigation and timing capability through 2030.

Europe and Russia develop their own GPS

In 2004 the United States signed an agreement with the European Community establishing cooperation with Europe’s plotted Galileo system. Galileo is a comprehensive navigation satellite system (GNSS) that is currently being built by the European Union and is separate from but complimentary to the United States Comprehensive Positioning System. The European Union’s Galileo system should be operational by 2013. The European Community’s political aim is to provide an self-determining GPS system that the European nations can rely on in times of war or political disagreement, because both Russia or the USA could disable use of their national systems by others (through encryption).

The Russian GPS system GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system that was developed by the former Soviet Union and now operated for the Russian regime by the Russian Space Forces. Like the European GPS system the Russian GPS system also functions separate from but is complimentary to the United States Comprehensive Positioning System. Russia started launching satellites for their GPS system into space on October 12, 1982 and was completed in 1995. The system rapidly fell into disrepair fallowing the end of the Russian economy but in 2001 the Russian regime started restoring the system with hopes of restoring comprehensive coverage by the end of 2009.

GPS Systems today

Depending on the GPS unit a GPS receiver only needs a signal from 3-4 satellites to calculate the units position and will work in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or set up fees like with a cell phone to operate GPS receivers and although some GPS receivers have extra features like real time traffic updates that will have a monthly charge, some GPS receivers like Garmins Nuvi “T” series come with free live traffic for the life of the unit. Today’s GPS is extremely accurate thanks to their parallel multi-channel design. Garmin’s 12 parallel channel receivers are very quick to lock onto satellites when first turned on and they maintain a strong lock even in dense foliage or city’s with tall buildings because they continuously track signals from up to 12 satellites at any given time. Even if a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver loses signals from 8 satellites at once it will still function properly.

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) was developed by the Federal Aviation Administration to augment the Comprehensive Positioning System to improve its accuracy, integrity, and availability. WAAS was originally intended to enable aircraft to rely on GPS for all phases of running away, including the precision approach to airport’s within its coverage area. All though originally intended for aviation most GPS receivers today are WAAS-enabled including automotive, boating chartplotters and hand-held units. WAAS uses a network of ground based reference stations, in North America and Hawaii, to measure small variations in the GPS satellites’ signals. Measurements from these reference stations are routed to master stations and then they send correction messages to geostationary WAAS satellites. Persons satellites then broadcast the correction messages back to Earth, where WAAS-enabled GPS receivers use the correction data while computing their positions to improve accuracy. WAAS enabled GPS receivers are accurate to within 3 meters and that make them the most accurate GPS receivers for civilian use on the market today. In fact a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can even give you directions right down to the lane your car is roving in (as long as the mapping program supports “lane help” directions) and With no additional equipment or fees required to take advantage of WAAS-enabled GPS receivers they are becoming as ordinary as cell phone’s.

FOTA is an acronym for Firmware Over-the-Air. It is used for upgrades to mobile phones and PDAs. Most major mobile phone manufacturers provide information about software updating on their websites, typically in their customer support section. They usually list which handset models support over-the-air software updating (via FOTA) or which ones still require use of a cable-PC connection.
You can check to see if your mobile phone supports FOTA by searching through your phone’s menu. The feature goes by several names including Software Update, Firmware Update or Device Management.
ARCchart, a UK-based analyst firm, estimates that globally, at least 230 handset models have been released between 2003 and October 2006 that contain FOTA support. By 2008, the firm forecasts that 50% of all handsets shipping will be FOTA-enabled. Of that figure, most mid-range and high-end handsets shipping will be FOTA-competent, in addition to a few low-end devices.
Current phone manufacturers that produce FOTA competent phones contain LG, NEC, Nokia, Motorola, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, and others.
In its report, ARCchart reports that a number of vendors offer firmware update competent server and client technology. These can be categorized into three tiers:
FOTA update technology suppliers: HP, InnoPath, Insignia (bought by Smith Micro) and Red Bend. All of these vendors provide client-server FOTA manner of speaking and update technology, with the exception of Red Bend Software which focuses on client-side software.
Firmware manner of speaking server vendors: HP, InnoPath and Mformation which offer FOTA manner of speaking (and in some cases firmware lifecycle management) as part of a much broader MDM attention suite.
MDM server vendors and integrators: Gemalto, HP and WDS Comprehensive who integrate or repackage firmware management server products from other vendors.

Approaches
There are three fundamentally different technological approaches to generating delta files and applying these files to the firmware persona: patching, padding, and computation.
Patching
Patching involves inserting a jump instruction in the beginning of the block to be replaced, which points to the replacement block. The replacement block is appended to the persona in a free expansion area. The drawback is that the updated persona is not bit-for-bit identical to the first target version and requires excessive amounts of memory in real-world firmware deployments.
Padding
Padding involves count excess memory or ads around firmware blocks that may be replaced. The challenge here is that it requires additional 10-20% of memory and introduces plotting overheads in the manufacturer development process. In addition, memory blocks which are not padded cannot often be updated, which makes the approach impractical for non-sequential updates.
Computation
Computation processes the output from the software compiler and linker to generate optimized update instructions. This approach does not interfere with the development process, yet produces a bit-for-bit exact images. The computational approach allows for predictable firmware update sizes, supports non-consecutive version upgrades and unlimited updates per device.

Let’s face it, if you’re trying to find yourself a new mobile phone, or if you’re trying to get yourself that perfect mobile broadband deal, it can be a bit of a minefield. You have to factor in the tariff, how many minutes you get, how many texts, whether you get international wandering… wel, the list goes on. But the thing is, it doesn’t have to be a minefield. There’s no point running in half-cocked, and buying a mobile phone or a mobile broadband package, purely on the spur of the moment. Otherwise you’ll get buyer’s remorse, and you won’t delight in your buy. Like anything in life, prepare, prepare, prepare!

Step 1 – Analyse what you really want from your new deal

Ok, it sounds obvious, and it sounds silly, but you’d be amazed how many broadcast don’t do this. You need to question yourself: ‘What factors determine that I need a new mobile phone or mobile broadband? What benefits do I want to get from my new doohickey? How am I going to use it?’ In essence, sit down and stay on this rough guideline:

- How much am I willing to (or can afford to) pay every month?

So, go on to one of them, armed with the knowledge you have from Step 1, and start searching. Now, the next bit of advice may signal contrary, but basically… once you have fed in the details of what you want from the deal, the scomparison site will bring back handsets that contest that deal. So, you know that whatever you’re now seeing is within your range of options. Once you know that, it lets you go onto the next step with confidence…

Now that you’ve made all the logical choices about what you need, you have a list of mobile phones and mobile broadband packages that fit your needs.
