The G’zOne Boulder’s clamshell design features a protective bed of silicon rubber and surrounded on the outside by a sturdy frame of reinforced plastic coated with polyurethane. With unique screws, keypads and side keypads, water-resistant fitters and O-ring combinations, the G’zOne Boulder is able to withstand blowing rant and high humidity and can even stay underwater up to 30 minutes (at a depth of 1 meter with the ports closed).
The outside of the clamshell has a round, 1.2-inch monochrome screen that displays current time, signal strength, and battery life, and it can also switch to an electronic compass readout. The exterior of the face also includes the camera lens and flash. The internal LCD measures 2 inches (diagonally) and has a 240 x 320-pixel resolution with support for a 65K color depth. The phonebook can store up to 500 contact entries, each with manifold fields for phone numbers and email addresses. It supports caller groups and ringer/picture ID. The phone’s internal memory can be expanded via MicroSD/MicroSDHC media up to 8 GB in size

Military Standards Testing
The G’zOne Type-S passed all of the following tests, performed in accordance with Military Standards 810F, with all ports (battery, headset and charging) on the phone closed:
- The Water Resistance test was performed in accordance with Method 506.4, Course of action I. The G’zOne Type-S was subjected to this test with the handset open and closed, but with ports closed for 30 minutes on the front of the unit and then 30 minutes on the back of the unit. The test was designed to simulate rainfall of 2 inches per hour with a 40 MPH wind.
Result: The G’zOne Type-S showed no visible prove of hurt or deterioration caused by testing.
- The Humidity test was performed in accordance with Method 507.4. The G’zOne Type-S tested for operation after the end of the tenth sequence. Each sequence was 24 hours and the entire test was performed over ten days. The temperature was cycled between 86 and 140°F with the relative humidity at 95 percent constant.
Result: The G’zOne Type-S showed no visible prove of hurt or deterioration caused by testing.
- The Drop test was performed in accordance with Method 516.5, Course of action IV. The G’zOne Type-S was sequentially dropped in non-operating mode, onto each face, edge and corner for a total of 26 drops from a height of 1.50 meters (4.9 feet). The drop surface was defined as two-inch-thick plywood over a steel plate over concrete.
Result: The G’zOne Type-S powered on.
- The Dust Resistance test was performed in accordance with Method 510.4, Course of action I. A temperature of 95°F was used for this test. Silica flour as defined by the test ordinary was used. Devices are given a passing grade when moving parts are not bound or blocked and if the unit powers on.
Result: The G’zOne Type-S showed no visible prove of hurt or deterioration.
- The Immersion test was conducted in accordance with Method 512.4, Course of action 1, with the handset immersed in water for a period of 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter with ports closed.
Result: The G’zOne successfully powered on with no visible prove of hurt or deterioration.

I have to say, without reservation, that having owned a honest number of cell phones…I cannot wait until I can swith the casio boulder for absolutly anything else. Oh it lives up to it’s name, it still operates as it would after a drop kick. but that is only due to the fact that it barely works before it’s kicked. the battery will shut off with out reason for one thing. and the face show for both a frind of mine and I have come away from each other of their own accord. the signal quality is pathetic…you will not hear any incomming calls, and the bloody thing seems to only ring when and if it feels like it. I have held the lousy thing in my hand, and seen calls go honest to vocimail, without a peep, and with the volume at full (and yes in the exact same place where calls where recieved before). beyond that the alarm clock does not function worth a d*** it will not ring, or even bother to acknowledge that the time set has passesed(tested on six different occasions) UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE CASIO A DIME FOR THIS MISERABLE P.O.S.!!!!!It is hardly worth a penny.

Before I get a new phone, I everlastingly read reviews. Overall, save the speakers, broadcast seem to be pretty pleased with this phone. The phone I was switching from was an LG Chocolate. That phone was fantastic and I was sure I could not like another phone any better.
Well, the G’zone boulder is awesome. it is sturdy, light, sleek and sits nicely in your pocket. The speakers are not the best, but all things have their the makings downers, right? I was disappointed to find out that the VZW Backup Assistant is not setup for this phone and I can only hope that is not a permanent scenario.
There are nearly no specific accessories for this phone, which is a bit odd. Maybe there will be some with time.
In small, this phone is fantastic. It has everything you need, including a camera with a flash, a port for additional memory, waterproofness (which is right! i did drop mine in a nasty puddle and the phone took that and did not flinch), decent signal, a compass (which seemed silly at the time, but is cool) and it has the push to talk stuff…if you use that.

I’ve only had it for a few days, but it works flawlessly so far. Immediately after activating it, the phone did an automatic software update which did not require any action on my part. It did the update right here at home, I didn’t have to go to a Verizon store. The signal is brilliant, with fantastic volume and clarity. I havn’t encounted any static during calls as reported by others. As an avid outdoorsperson, I like to duplicate gear as practical, and one can’t have too many flashlights, compass, or GPS units. This phone has all three, along with fantastic communication, and even persons who didn’t like the signal quality could attest to it’s durability. It seems Verizon has solved the battery endurance problem as well, mine came with an extra, high capacity battery. It would appear Verizon has solved the earlier problems. This phone fits the bill for folks who like the outdoors, and I can recommend it with no reservations.
11/25/09: After 7 months of use, I am editing my review slightly. The phone still works fantastic. It’s been under water with no ill effects. I’ve dropped it several times in the dirt and onto pavement and it only has minimal scratches. From a couple feet away, it still looks new. I’ve found the built in MP3 player to be handy as well when I’m backpacking and miss my music.
The only reason I’m dropping it from a 5 star rating to a 4 star rating is because Verizon and Casio both advertise that this phone has a built in digital compass. Unfortunately, the compass apparently only works a few times before it quits pointing north. Verizon replaced the phone once and the new one did the exact same thing…worked a few times, then quit pointing north. The calibration feature quits working as well, so there is no way to fix it. I’ve contacted the phone vendor and Verizon, and the only excuses I got were that they know there is a problem, but Casio, UT Starcom, and Verizon can’t choose on how to fix it. If someone is going to advertise a phone with a built in compass, the compass should darn well work, and this one is useless.
The only reason I’m not dropping the rating further is because the LED flashlight on the phone DOES work, and it works very well. I don’t know how many times I’ve found that light to be EXTREMELY handy and useful. A very excellent feature!
So, overall, after 7 months, here’s what I can say: It’s a fantastic PHONE. It’s a terrible compass.
