Ruggedized to military standards, this super-tough clamshell is not only waterproof, it’s shock resistant, and dust resistant, too. Non-tough guy features contain a 2-megapixel camera, EV-DO high-speed data capabilities, a QVGA show, a speakerphone, a built-in mobile Web 2.0 browser, and more.
Design
The G’zOne features a ruggedized clamshell design with a large 240 x 320 color show with support for a whopping 65,000 colors–perfect for watching V Cast content. The outside of the clamshell features a supplementary monochrome LCD screen that can show incoming call information, battery life, signal strength, current date and time, stopwatch functions, and more. The protected camera lens and flash reside on the front take in, just above the external show, while up/down volume controls and a camera control button are on the right side of the phone. Most of the phone’s features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset’s backlit control pad. The G’zOne also features a flashlight, which is housed on the back of the phone, meanwhile, a unique carrying clip is built into the top of the clamshell.
Calling Features
The G’zOne’s 31 MB of built in memory is more than enough to support up to 500 entries in the phone’s address book. Meanwhile, a voice dialing feature makes calling friends and associates as simple as adage their names, while the built-in speakerphone allows you to talk handsfree. The phone also comes with built-in polyphonic ringtones and a vibrating alert. More ringtones can be downloaded via Verizon’s Get It Now service. Ringtones can be assigned to specific callers so you don’t have to look at the phone to know who’s calling, or you can contest pictures with callers to identify them. Lastly, the G’zOne’s GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911.
A design that screams for action. |
Messaging, Internet and Tools
With support for the EV-DO high-speed data ordinary, the G’zOne is fully well-matched with Verizon’s V Cast service. With V Cast, you can download and stream high-quality video. Need news and weather? Get the latest Accuweather forecast delivered right to your handset, or stream CNN news headlines. ESPN sports updates, entertainment news from E!, and even Sesame Road content for the kids, are all available.
With support for sending and receiving text, picture and video messages, the G’zOne has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging, too. Extrapolative text entry technology, which makes it simpler for broadcast to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit–a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
Getting on the Internet anywhere is simple with the G’zOne. Use the G’zOne’s built in Web browser and Verizon’s Mobile Web package to read and send e-mails, chat instant messages and view your pet web content. Verizon’s Get It Now wireless download service is also fully well-matched with the G’zOne. This pay-per-download service features attention downloads, games and productivity tools. You can also personalize your handset with ringtone downloads using the Get It Now service.
The G’zOne ships with a number of handy tools including a calendar, an alarm clock, a calculator, a flashlight and a GPS feature that enables VZ Route-finder functionality. VZ Route-finder provides heads-up, voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions (with auto-rerouting if you miss a turn); local search of nearly fourteen million points of interest (POIs) in the U.S.A.; and detailed color maps that can be quickly panned and zoomed. With VZ Route-finder you will know where you are, know what’s around you, and know how to get there.
Imaging and Entertainment
While the G’zOne is a fantastic platform for watching V Cast video content, it can also capture video that can be shared with your friends and associates via video messaging. Of course, you can also use the camera to capture still pictures, too. The camera features 2-megapixel resolution, and an LED flash.

This is my first cell phone in about 5 years, so I really have nothing to compare it with. Overall, it’s a excellent phone: voice is clear and loud, camera is decent. My only complaint is that it cannot respond correctly to voice dialing commands, which makes it harder to place a call. I’m hoping that the new Type-S comes out before my 30-day trial expires so I can trade this in for the newer model. Maybe that one will be able to get the voice recognition commands correctly.

I really like this phone and I have had it about a week. The only issue I have had so far is that the show screen is freezing up on me today. I can hear calls but none of the buttons on the keypad work and I can’t get into any menus or anything.
Anyone else have this?

First let me tell you that I am an engineer that looks at detail and have worked with mil spec requirements for a long time. I got this phone after I read the Consumers Report recommendation. It was also reported to be able to take abuse and there were sites on the web that demonstrated survival from abuse. I have two big complaints. 1) The holster just never seemed to release the phone correctly after it is clipped to my belt. I believe the looped antenna end was to disengage first when coming out of the holster, but this was a difficult operation and resulted in releasing from the other end. Over time this apparently wore the ends of the clamp causing the phone to be less secure in the holster. After about a year the phone is now released at the wrong times. Good thing it is water proof because I expect it to go in the crapper one of these days; it just made two attempts to hit the urinal (yes I am a male). 2) When the phone hits the ground the battery flies out >50% of the time. Didn’t see that happen in the video!
The excellent is the “flashlight” feature where the LED flash can stay on and be used as a flashlight. This really comes in handy at times. Overall I don’t recommend the phone because it does not take a drop very well and the holster is poorly designed.

I like this phone for durability BUT I have yet to take this phone out (or place it back) in the hip pouch without pushing the buttons on the side. Now I’m broadcasting b/c I hit the speaker button. Then putting it away or taking it out I hit the buttons a few more times and I turn the ringer off/down/mute whatever and now I miss calls. I have yet to pick up this phone without screwing up settings – The buttons on the side S#@K – what were they thinking – didn’t they test button placement b4 production? The store rep said – oh, why don’t you just lock yourself out so you can not make changes – well fantastic now I have to unlock the friggin phone b4 I can answer the call or make one – Now I know why the called it the Geez phone – I scream Geez-ous every time I have to use it!

This is my first camera phone & it takes excellent pictures. Lots of bells & whistles. I am on equipment all day and the dust is what killed my other phone. This one is supposed to be dust proof. Only time will tell.
