The History of GPS Technology
With GPS devices now in millions of cars, cell phones and purses around the country, it is hard to imagine that only a decade ago, the technology was used nearly exclusively by large corporations and the military. But time has went quick for Comprehensive Positioning Systems, which makes sense given that the tale of GPS’ description starts with a measure of time.
It all starts with TIME
GPS technology exists today because scientists sought a way to measure time more accurately than it had ever been measured before. And so, they developed the Atomic Clock, a super-accurate device that measure the time within a billionth of a second.
But the Atomic Clock was not made in order to keep scientists from being late for feast. They used the accuracy of the clock to test Einstein’s scheme of relativity as it pertained to time and space.
Using Atomic Clocks to measure time and space
With these atomic clocks, scientists and engineers learned that there were slight discrepancies in time around the globe. They started to position the clocks the world over from Mount Everest to the Gobi Desert and then looked for tiny differences in the time in each of the locations. This information helped confirm Einstein’s view of the universe and would soon become a key part of satellite technology.
Sputnik and the creation of a military GPS system
When the Russians launched Sputnik in the 1950’s, scientists quickly learned that the satellite could be used to track locations on the ground by beaming a signal up to the satellite – and having a response returned to Earth. How that message traveled determined the location of the satellite relative to a point on the earth.
The US Navy soon started launching satellites of their own, and used them in key military actions to help troops engage in the proper battle locations and help large ships circumnavigating the globe.
After a time, Navy engineers realized that enough satellites, placed in very specific positions with an orbit around the earth, would start a clear picture of our earth – and that this “picture” could be used map out individual points around the globe with stunning accuracy.
Completion of the System
In 1993, it all came together. The United States Navy launched the 24th of 24 carefully placed satellites into orbit – and the Comprehensive Positioning System was born. The satellites are positioned in such a way that now anyone with an inexpensive GPS device can locate their position (or another location) anywhere on the earth. And to reckon, it all started with Einstein and a group of scientists who wanted to find the ultimate measure of time.
Today GPS devices are a useful tool for many Americans. The technology has become very affordable and helps individuals obtain proper directions to their location while using a minimal amount of gas or time. And if someone had told you twenty years ago that GPS technology would be a “hot Christmas gift”, chances are you wouldn’t have given them the time of day.

5 Common Misconceptions About GPS Devices
When a technology becomes the “IT” product of the holiday season, there’s bound to be some misinformation out there. This year’s hot product is the consumer GPS – and it can truly do some incredible things, including: provide directions with real-time turn-by-turn navigation, help you dodge traffic and even make hands-free cell phone calls with Bluetooth. But there are also some things about GPS that just aren’t right. Here’s a look at some of the largest myths about GPS technology.
5 Most Ordinary Misconceptions about GPS:
Myth #1: The weather can affect your GPS
Fact: Cloudy or rainy conditions have nothing to do with the performance of your GPS device. Reckon about it like this: airplanes using GPS devices to navigate through cloudy conditions thousands of times a day. Last time we checked, the commercial aviation system was running without too many GPS-correlated problems. Well, the same technology they use is found in your car’s GPS devices. The only thing that can truly keep your GPS device from operating at peak performance are tall buildings, mountains and other large structures that may block it’s signal.
Myth #2: The regime can track you because of your GPS device
Fact: It is right that some commercial grade GPS devices send out a signal about your whereabouts, the consumer GPS devices sold by Garmin, Magellan and other companies only hear information from satellite systems. While this news will be no doubt disconcerting to conspiracy theorists, the rest of us can breathe a small simpler knowing that our whereabouts are confidential.
Myth #3: GPS devices mean you don’t have to mind the road
Fact: Just because you have a helpful GPS device in your car doesn’t mean you should be any less vigilant as a driver. It is vital to mind the road and everlastingly pay attention to where you are in journey. In fact, some directions provided by your GPS device may take you through areas in which you don’t want to travel. It is everlastingly vital to use these directions in conjunction with what you can see with your own eyes, and of course, ordinary sense.
Myth #4: GPS devices don’t work outside of a local area
Fact: The beauty of GPS devices for your car is that they work nearly anywhere. That means you can take your family for a cross-country handbook and the GPS will provide with information every step of your journey. In fact, many GPS devices can help you find local points-of-interest along the way including parks, museums, restaurants and more.
Myth #5: GPS devices are too pricey
Fact: Of all the falsehoods out there about GPS devices, this one might be the most out of touch. Currently, there are more inexpensive GPS devices out there that at any time in the technology’s description. Even the high end models from Tom Tom, Garmin and others are practically priced, and the “basic” units (which are still packed with features) are affordable enough for nearly any budget.

Top 4 GPS Receiver with Bluetooth
One of the leading top 4 GPS receivers with Bluetooth is the CoPilot Live 7 North America. The receiver features a speech engine, 2D and 3D map view, interest points, routing options, map theme change, road maps, real-time traffic info, etc. This seems to be one of the leading GPS receivers sold on the market. Loading the program is simple and the software includes North American maps, and more than 6 million points of interest. But, The program’s multibutton controls are challenging, and finding your way around the menus can take a while.
Another of the top 4 GPS receiver with Bluetooth is the 51 channel GlobalTop G33. It is the latest “ultra low power Bluetooth?” The receiver is amazingly affordable. It features 51 tracking channels, and it supported by EGNOS and WAAS. It has a superb urban Canyon performance. It will work with your computer, cell phone and PDA and is compliant with RoHS. Best of all it will work with any navigation program. But, some users find it gets overheated quite a few times.
The third GPS receiver with Bluetooth we reviewed is the GlobalTop HG 100 HUD. This receiver expenditure about $20 more than the last model, but it has some incredible features that really has to be considered. Its base is on the high-tech MediaTek and it has ambient light sensors with a speed warning function as well.
It also has an indicator that shows you which direction you are heading and is a very handy attention to have around. In addition, you can use this receiver with your PDA, computer and smart phone. Innumerable other features are available also, in which you should compare them with Qstarz BT-Q818X, and BT-Q890 the Nano Keychain with Bluetooth GPS receiver.
But we found Garmin Nuvi 360 portable GPS with Bluetooth best of all. It integrates wireless technology with a microphone and speaker that lets you make hands-free mobile phone calls using your well-matched Bluetooth-enabled phone. Simply dial numbers with the n?’s touch screen keypad to place a call, and to answer calls, just tap the screen and speak directly into its built-in microphone. Some of it’s other features includes : MP3 player with pre-loaded sample songs and audio books, JPEG picture viewer, travel alarm, and currency converters, 2D or 3D views; pre-loaded with most recent Navteq-driven maps for United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Canada, Turn-by-turn directions with real road names; real-time traffic and weather info, Super-bright 2.8 x 2.1-inch sunlight-readable color screen, Show resolution: 320 x 240 pixels
Each model has some unique features to consider. Be sure to check them out on the internet before you choose to buy any of them. GPS and Other Emergency Contact Devices
What is the best kind of GPS system for you? This depends on what you intend to use it for.
Garmin 12 GPS is very excellent. There are innumerable models of the 12, 12XL etc. They can be found for under $150. The altimeter is usually off but once you find your position, most of the time the map tells me what my altitude is. They have a pretty decent battery life in view of the fact that you seldom ever use your GPS for 12 hours honest.
The vendors selling GPS units are Garmin and Magellan, persons are excellent brands and can meet your requirements quite well. There is a third player, Brunton (compass makers gone hi-tech). They make very practically priced GPS units with lots of bells and whistles. Garmin GPS records the distance travelled, speed, average speed, etc. Make sure you get excellent battery life and enough memory to be useful.
Mitac Mio 168 comes out well for my requirements but is more pricey, especially if you go for the tom tom mapping software too (voice directions when I’m out on my motorbike!)
Most of the functions on GPS of this sort you can get from a map. Maps on pure GPS are not as excellent as on a GPS/PDA but excellent maps for these are usually pricey. Some mountain rescue team members use PDAs with 1:25000 OS mapping data for recording search patterns etc.
You really need to look at your own plans – for instance, most backpackers use GPS to “confirm” their position, and they don’t use it to set waypoints, determine compass direction, navigate, etc. Many backpackers use it as an emergency navigation tool in Utah’s deep, narrow canyons, where a map and compass can be nearly useless.
One word of warning, take very from the bottom of your heart the statement on the front of all GPS units “Do not rely on this unit as the primary source of your navigation.” It’s everlastingly a excellent thought to have a map and compass with you when engaging in wilderness travel and use them right along with the GPS. It can really be kind of fun to see how accurate you are with a compass and compare map routes with GPS routes to see why you finished up going the way you did.
What are the numbers on a compass for and how do you use a compass? The numbers on the compass are for degrees or headings. They will tell you what direction to proceed on. The first thing you need to do is figure out what kind of compass you have, a floating dial or a floating needle.
As to emergency contact, you could buy an pricey Iridium/satellite phone – they can get a signal just like a GPS does. They run over $1,000. It may also be possible to rent one. For real emergencies, not simply a vehicle breakdown, there is a GPS signaling device, much like ONStar (GM trademark), that can send an emergency signal. The final thing to do is to check in at the local ranger station, BLM office, forest service visitor center, etc., and see about leaving your itinerary with them, as well as a promise to check-out with them when leaving. If you don’t check in, they would send someone out to check on you.

Gps For Dummies
For decades, men have been taking jibes at women for their apparent inability to read maps. While we really don’t generalizations, we’re willing to acknowledge that life would be simpler with a personal route-finder in the passenger seat. That’s why, when we were introduced to GPS, we took to it the way Angelina’s taken to babies. It gives precise directions; is hassle free, and idiot-proof to use. You can any buy a GPS device, or get the software installed on your phone— whatever you find handier. If you’re one of persons who’s daunted by directions, read on!
Devices
MapmyIndia GPS navigators are currently amongst the most ordinary in the Indian market. They retail a bunch of devices but we found two, in particular, simple to use. Depending on your budget, pick between the Road Pilot and VX 140. They both offer voice-guided navigation—all you do is feed your starting point and your destination, and it gives you voice-guided directions! “The devices have been pre-loaded with maps from crosswise the country. So it works fantastic within the city, as well as for road trips outside. The maps also show you the closest ATMs, police stations, restaurants, hotels, petrol pumps and other essential utilities, so you never need to stop and question strangers for directions,” says Rohan Verma, Director, MapmyIndia.
The VX 140, especially, gets a nod of approval from us for its integrated multimedia player— which means that away from each other from giving you directions, it’ll also play music and movies. The 4 ½ inch screen also has in-built Bluetooth that can be used to make or hear calls. The Road Pilot expenditure Rs 8,000, and the VX 140 is Rs 15,000. “It’s a one-time cost only, and the device is so simple-to use —simply plug and play,” adds Verma. Larger electronics stores and automobile accessory outlets stock these devices; you can also order one on www.mapmyindia.com.
Many phones these days come equipped with maps, but depending upon your service provider, GPRS expenditure apply. If you own a Blackberry and are on an unlimited internet plot, then all you need to do is read the manual and figure out how to use the maps. If your handset doesn’t have this feature, you can buy the map software from MapmyIndia for Rs 2,400. “This, again, is a one time cost, and you don’t need to pay a GPRS fee to use the same,” says Verma. The software is available on the MapmyIndia website as well as mobile stores.
