TomTom One XL Review

TomTom One XL has a bright screen and pre-loaded maps right out of the box. It also picks up your location quickly and has built in bluetooth capabilities. The main difference between the XL and the One is that the XL has a larger screen 4.3″ compared to it’s predecesser at 3.5″ and an option for real-time traffic via a bluetooth enabled device such as a cell phone. This unit is compact and very portable.

What is great about the TomTom One XL Gps?

The TomTom One XL has a large, bright touch screen and comes with pre-loaded maps right out of the box. This unit picks up your location quickly and has built in bluetooth. This also enables you to add optional services, like real-time traffic and weather information as long as you have a bluetooth enabled cell phone. I don’t believe this service is available in the united states at this time. I also do not no if it will ever be available in the US for this device. It has a large choice of routes including the fastest, shortest, non-toll roads, highways and more. This GPS also speaks instructions very clearly.

What is not so good about the TomTom One XL?

The unit does have text-to-speech capability. Restaurants are not listed by type in the POI database. It is not easy to view contact information. The menus are a bit laborous to get through. Bluetooth cannot be used for hands free.

TomTom One XL features include, and SD card slot, which allow you add additional maps and POI.

There is a power button located on the top of the unit, which is easy to press.

The TomTom has the mini-USB power inlet/connection on the bottom.

It has a 2D and 3D map perspective as with most Gps’s these days.

This unit uses an internal lithium ion battery that the manufacturer estimates will last 2 hrs, but it does include a car power adapter.

The TomTom One XL offers numerous POI like, gas stations, motels, restaurants, ATMs, beaches and concert locations. However there is no easy way to search for these locations unless you are browsing the map.

You do have the option of choosing between 55 different voices with various accents that are built in to the device.

What the TomTom One XL offers is ease of use, a large, bright touch screen, accurate directions, and quickly finds your location.

In my opinion this is not a bad gps but you can get more for the same price in other gps units.

The price at the time of this article ranges from $229-$300 for this unit.

In the wake of personal navigation devices’ success, cellular carriers have started to offer on-board and off-board navigation solutions, as well as a range of LBS (Location Based Services) such as friend finder and local search on GPS handsets.

Community and social-networking-related functionality, such as the sharing of POIs (Points of Interest) and geo-tagged pictures, is also becoming popular and is expected to boost GPS-enabled handset uptake as carriers, handsets manufacturers, and service providers look to capitalize on the LBS trend.

“While most CDMA handsets are already GPS-enabled and GPS is set to become a standard feature in GSM smartphones, GSM feature phones are next on the agenda to be equipped with GPS technology,” says ABI Research principal analyst Dominique Bonte.

“GPS chipset vendors increasingly target handsets, looking for new markets and spurred on by the recent dramatic growth of personal navigation devices.”

However, as GPS begins to penetrate lower-end phones, the cost, power consumption, and footprint of GPS chipsets will have to be further reduced. This will be made possible by single chipset technology and the emergence in 2009 of combination chips integrating GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi all on one die.

Major silicon vendors such as Broadcom, NXP, and Atheros are well positioned to develop such solutions following the acquisition of GPS chipset vendors Global Locate, GloNav, and u-Nav, respectively.

At the same time, the thorny issue of indoor GPS coverage has to be addressed, since handset-based LBS services are frequently used in challenging environments with reduced GPS signal strength. Network-assisted A-GPS and high-sensitivity GPS-receivers are becoming key requirements to reduce the time necessary to acquire fixes and to improve location accuracy.

When you’re rushing from a late meeting to your child’s t-ball game, you need to know exactly where you are going or you could miss her getting her first hit or catch. You may not have GPS in your car, but you do have a PDA – a personal digital (or data) assistant. Shouldn’t your “assistant” be able to help you get there? Now it can!

There is a new kind of PDA with GPS embedded which can not only keep your schedule, but also help you navigate to the places on your schedule. Not only can it tell you where you are supposed to be and when, but how long it will take you to get there. In fact, with new technology, a GPS enabled PDA can even factor in the amount of real time traffic in giving you an estimate of your travel time or actually advising you about when to leave. They can also give you alternate routes where there is less traffic on the fly.

These PDAs with built-in GPS come preloaded with up-to-date maps of your country, and give both text- and voice turn-by-turn directions. This way you can both see and hear the directions for maximum safety while driving (In fact they can sometimes project the voice directions to your car stereo so you will hear them loud and clear). They also can navigate you to points of interest such as gas stations and stores along your way.

Some things to look for in a PDA with built-in GPS include the ability to automatically update your device through a computer so you get the latest changes in roads and routes, and good service coverage so you are never almost there when your map blacks out. You should also look for a system that allows you to do two things at once – like making a speakerphone call while you are driving without losing your route.

Another new GPS enabled PDA technology allows you to share information with others who have GPS devices. You can send a colleague or family member in another car the same directions, or traffic information, or information about where to find a gas station, while you are driving as easy as making a phone call.

Imagine what your new, more powerful handheld assistant can do for you right now: Tell you how to get where you are going, when to leave so you are on time, where you can stop along the way to bring something to the meeting, and whether there is traffic in your way!

The GPS (Global Positioning System) is probably one of the greatest inventions created in the 20th century. It is a method that finds a receiver (whether on earth or outer space) to inform you of your location and give you directions where you want to go. Today, its functionality is used in varied ways and new technologies right now are being developed to maximize its use.

How it works

GPS devices work by decoding signals from satellites. These satellites orbit the earth and pass their signals to inexpensive aerials, which is then passed to your GPS. The information received by the GPS will be used by its dedicated software. Through different signals from various satellites, your GPS software now analyzes your position in terms of longitude and latitude.

Furthermore, the software in your GPS is so advanced that it can even identify the specific satellite that passed on the signal – its location and the exact calculation of the signal’s travel time.

Mapping

When the GPS receives the signal and identify its location, it will then compare it to a map and analyze possible routes to follow. This is the reason why a GPS device is so expensive. Of course this map has to be regularly updated to make it accurate.

Different maps are used for varied users:

· Drivers need to have maps that contain accurate data of road systems in the region. They do not necessarily need the land layout.

· Hikers do not need detailed road information. Instead, they require specific data of tracks or trails, water spots, or local terrain.

· Sailors need navigable channels, sea bed data, and other information that would allow them safe sea travel.

· Fishermen need to use a marine GPS to track fish movements and predict where they need to fish the following day. This made cooperative fishing easier, as the boats relay their location to one another while they look for a good fishing spot. In fact, there are other features like “fish finders” where the GPS uses sonar functions that track movements of fishes in real time. The marine GPS even stores detailed fishing data as well as maritime information.

How to Get Started

You can easily avail of GPS devices designed for your specific need. In a car, it could contain features like route calculations, voice guidance, and even map upgrade.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, you can get hold of GPS devices such as Magellan and Garmin which is a rugged handheld GPS device with a map.

GPS simply stands for “global positioning system”, and GPS navigation is a program by which maps are created to guide you towards your destination. But the benefit over a traditional paper map is that this is an electronic device which can offer your other functions besides simply telling you where you are.

The technology has come a long way in recent years, and has greatly grown in popularity. This is due to the fact that it is extremely useful for getting places you are unsure of, for anyone who travels for work or holidays.

It works by connecting the electronic device to satellites. These satellites send signals to the devices, which then decode them to discover the exact location of the user. Not only this but the device will also tell you the speed in which you are travelling and how long it should take you to reach your destination.

Whilst it has become popular in mainstream use, it was once only used in the military in the mid 1960s though has steadily evolved to become a way for anybody to find where they are getting to easily and without stress.

Why might you need a GPS system? Well in today’s modern life many jobs call for travel to different places by car, and this can become especially stressful if you don’t know exactly where you are going. Stopping to ask people for directions can be difficult and time consuming, so knowing exactly where to go will really help to save you some time and make things less stressful. It will tell you exactly how to reach your destination, and how to get back again once you have finished.

When looking for a GPS system there are many you could choose. This will all depend on your specific needs. Some devices are cheaper than others and require less technical experience to use. Others will have more features, meaning it might take a while for you to get used to them all.

If you want unit with all possible features then you will have to opt for a more expensive unit. This will be well worth it if you travel a lot or are planning a driving holiday. They will provide you with a digital display that shows approaching roads as well as the traffic condition in certain areas, and will usually even include a voice prompt to tell you out loud (if you wish) where to turn and when to watch your speed (and so on). All of these features work together to make it extremely easy to reach your destination.

They are not only used for reaching your destination but they are also used for tracking, which is why it is more and more commonly seen in mobile phones. This helps people to be located if they become lost. Whatever you want it for, you should do some research into the machines that fit your individual needs. Once you find a system you will wonder how you ever did without it!

It was coming, sooner or later. With the increasingly smaller world made possible by the technology of cellphones and the Internet, it was a matter of time before all the streets, highways and points of interests in a major country will end up in one small neat battery powered package. GPS devices are becoming more and more a staple, part and parcel of American life at a rate that would stun even the most battled-scarred technology marketeer and evangelist. People are up and about using their handheld or in-car GPS devices for a variety of purposes, from getting safely and surely from point A to point B to scouting for specialty restaurants in their city.

Talk about innovating on a concept that has been bugging humankind since time immemorial! But purists might be asking, what about those days of simply driving around some vaguely familiar neighborhood grubbing around for some cozy place to dine?! Or, the sure fire one: parking and getting out of the car to rub shoulders with locals and asking for directions or suggestions? GPS devices are reinventing this tiny portion of American life, just as cell phones did some ten years ago. The reasons are as diverse as the GPS brands and models themselves, right up to the forms; some GPS devices refuse to just be trite and mediocre handhelds. The last few years uprooted GPS technology and planted it into computers, and to cell phones. Who can have the last say about what the next five years might bring us? Perhaps our billfolds will have embedded GPS chips so that if ever we’re held up the police will be able track our lost money.

According the wired, connected, in-the-know and converted faithful, GPS devices are the most meaningful inventions to come around since the tape player. Most say they can’t let go of their GPS model in that particualr brands because it alone has the ability to get you from one place to another without you mixing up hard-to-memorize directions, and without you trying to interpret the longitude and latitude of a map, or read the coffee-stained Mapquest directions that you printed out prior to the start of the trip. Yes, when it comes to crisscrossing the roads of unfamiliar towns with your car, there’s no doubt that GPS devices are the very precise thing you need to once and for all do what you need to do in that unfamiliar town.

The device generation that bears the alias of Ygeneration cannot swear too much how it is absolutely worth the price. Naturally, the parents of the aforementioned Y generation who are skeptic passengers in their children’s cars beg to differ. Whether it’s for the cost (automobile units costing $200-$400 and subscriptions for cell phone GPS costing more than $10 per month) or simply because GPS devices simply don’t cut the strict definition of an essential necessity, many older people think that the so-called GPS wave as nothing more than a passing annoyance, even more than what the cellphone was a decade ago. Will it be the same for GPS devices? Only time will tell.

Next you’ll need to choose what variety of maps you’d like for your GPS. Most GPS models will come with maps for the U.S. and many will also have maps for the rest of North America. These maps will usually include detailed street and highway maps that note countless points of interest like food, hotels, motels, gas stations, ATMs, and local attractions. Additional maps are often available for an extra fee.

All GPS models have the basic capability of finding your location on a map. However, modern units offers many other capabilities so you’ll need to choose what extra options you’d like for your GPS. Ever arrive late to a meeting with an important client due to bad traffic? Some units offer local traffic conditions that can help you avoid traffic and pick the quickest roads. News, local movie times, and local gas prices are also available options on some units.
