Comparing the Garmin nuvi 250 to the Garmin nuvi 770

The entry level Garmin 250 car sat nav is a very excellent entry level gps unit with a 7.2 x 5.4 cm show and approximately 5 hour life from its rechargeable lithium ion battery.  It has an internal speaker, a number of different ways to calculate routes (fastest, shortest, dodge tolls or highways) and will even act as a world travel clock and currency converter.

Body:

The entry level Garmin 250 car sat nav is a very excellent entry level gps unit with a 7.2 x 5.4 cm show and approximately 5 hour life from its rechargeable lithium ion battery.  It has an internal speaker, a number of different ways to calculate routes (fastest, shortest, dodge tolls or highways) and will even act as a world travel clock and currency converter.

If, but, you have a bit more money to spend, the Garmin 770 will offer a fantastic deal more.

Take, for example, the pre-loaded maps.  Where the Nuvi 250 comes with European maps, the Nuvi 770 has maps of eastern and western Europe as well as North America.  But the overall list of features of the Nuvi 770 is where it wins, hands down.  It has a larger screen than the 250 (9.7 x 5.7 cm), it speaks road names in a choice of downloadable voices (including Elvis Garmin and de Niro Garmin at extra cost) and has Bluetooth connectivity for hands free use with your mobile phone. You can dial the phone number you want on the touch screen and you just have to tap the screen to hear any in coming call and can talk using the built in microphone.

You can choose the keyboard layout you prefer (ABC or QWERTY) on the touch sensitive screen of the 770, it will act as an MP£ player and even link to your car radio with an FM transmitter(if you are going to use this function, it is best to check which countries you can use it in; Greece, Italy and Slovenia are ok, but in others low power FM transmitters aren’t allowed).

The Garmin 770 also has static speed camera locations pre programmed into it and will warn you as you approach one that is on its database.  But, if you are going to use the 770 in Europe, you should probably turn this function off, as it isn’t legal to use any such warning system in most western European countries.

Probably the most vital feature of the Garmin 770 is it’s TMC traffic receiver with a European life time subscription. This means that, any reported traffic problems, such as road works or traffic accidents, on or near your plotted route, will be reported to you and  you then can choose to dodge them or not simply by tapping the screen (UK traffic subscription extra).

If you have a number of sales appointments or deliveries to make, you can program them into the nuvi 700 and let the unit calculate the most well-methodical route for you. When you get there, if you have to park in one of persons huge surface car parks, when you remove it from the windscreen mount, it automatically remembers where you left the car so you can navigate back to  it.

So, you can see that the Nuvi 250 is an adequate sat nav, but for a bit extra, the Garmin nuvi 770 is a feature packed, mid range unit.

Garmin Nuvifone Preview ? Sat-nav for the Masses

Recently an increasing number of mobile phones have come with particular GPS and satellite navigation applications and functions; the HTC Artemis range and its bundled TomTom route-finder software being possibly the best-equipped. This has obviously helped in highlighting the fact that Sat-Nav is quick becoming an essential part of any multimedia device.

To date there hasn’t been a handset that is built from the ground up for this purpose, but GPS-giants Garmin have done just that with the Navifone.

In a varying range of blog and mobile news websites, the Navifone has been touted as an iPhone competitor, which is very surprising but more feasible than appearances may have you believe.

This assumption is based around the 3.5 inch touchscreen, which as you would expect is the main method of using the phone in nearly all situations. This is coupled with the simplistic yet attractive-looking boundary and in some aspects you can see why it has been given the dreaded task of competing with the iPhone.

As this phone hasn’t been shown first hand to the industry officially, it’s hard to make any kind of judgement regarding the effectiveness of the UI, but if it is as innovative as the iPhone was, things could get really fascinating. We do know that it is based upon the by now proven boundary on Garmin’s existing Nuvi Sat-Nav system.

Official specs are nigh-on-impossible to get hold of at this time, but there are some hazy details out there at the moment. The Navifone will have a (as mentioned earlier) 3.5” touchscreen show; HSDPA 3G access; digital camera with video (no Mega Pixel count yet) and media player with support for all the latest music file formats such as AAC+ etc, though this is still awaiting confirmation.

The Garmin Navifone will have 3 different ways in which to use the device, all of which can be selected with a single tap on the relevant on-screen option. The options are pretty self-explanatory – Phone; Search & Navigation. The search option in case you’re wondering is for locating your own position when lost, via the integrated Google local search option.

The Sat-Nav capabilities are also based on Garmin’s standalone Nuvi series of GPS receivers and are likely to be one of the best seen in mobile phones competent of this.

Once more specific details and specs are available we’ll have a better thought of how the Garmin Navifone will fit into the mobile phone marketplace once released, but until then methinks it’ll be one to mind closely over the coming months.
