Epic Tech Fails

The world of technology is full of bright new thoughts that promise to change the way we live; but, for every success there are numerous failures. Some technologies genuinely surprise us when they fall by the wayside, but others we realise were doomed to failure from the very beginning:

Doomsday Project – The BBC Doomsday Project was a partnership between Acorn Computers, Philips, Logica and the BBC and was designed to mark the 900th anniversary of the first doomsday book. It was compiled over a period of three years and was published in 1986 after having over one million broadcast contribute to the project. The material included maps, colour photos, statistical data, videos, virtual reality tours of major landmarks and the entire 1981census.

This information was stored on specially adapted laserdiscs with the intention that possibility generations could then look back on the material in years to come, but the laserdisc ordinary never lasted and, as such, it is close to impossible to find a machine nowadays competent of reading the code. Eventually a project was started to emulate the ancient system and publish the information to the Internet but the gentleman who was reverse engineering the project suffered an untimely fatality and as a result the Doomsday Project website remains offline.

The Internet Connected Fridge – Although it is too early to say that such an invention will never take off, the Internet Fridge has spent ten years in the making and doesn’t show any real promise of becoming mainstream. Personally I’ve never liked the thought of my fridge managing my kitchen inventory and then automatically buying my weekly shopping online.

I’d like to reckon that even in this modern day the upper classes individuals would want to go out and select their own weekly produce based on what’s freshest at the time rather than having their fridge do it for them. It’s also a small surreal when a machine decides that because you had strawberries and cream after tea this evening that you would necessarily want the same thing delivered to your step the following morning.

Paperless Office – There has been talk of a paperless office for years; making a world where printers are redundant and all information is stored digitally. Fortunately for us here at Refresh Cartridges (but somewhat unfortunate for our background) in reality the modern office is a long way from being paperless. I feel a lot safer with paper and when faced with a large report it is bizarrely simpler to read it off sheets of bleached bark than from a monitor.

Video Phones – The longest video phone conversation that I have ever had lasted two seconds, and that was simply to test that my mobile phone SIM card supported 3G. There have been real attempts to push video calling on to the general broadcast and it is one of the main sales pitches of the mobile operators when touting their new high speed networks but the service still struggles to find an audience. There are now no real technological barriers preventing all of us from video calling, but the simple certainty of the matter is that broadcast don’t want to see who they’re calling.

Chris Holgate writes a weekly article of all things tech correlated. He is a director and copyrighter of the online computer consumables business Refresh Cartridges who sell low-cost ink cartridges, toner cartridges, computer hardware and other computer consumables online. An archive of his work can be found at www.computerarticles.co.uk.

There’s an adventurer in every one of us. Free yours and delight in the outstanding experience of playing Arvale II – Ocean of Time 4.0, which will be your gateway to a world of valor and fantastic deeds. Your fate and the fate of the world are in your hands!

No spoiling here, but the plot of this captivating game is Epic from a hub letter, involving powerful gods and goddesses, time travel and, of course, saving the world. The tale starts and develops in a vast World of Arvale composed of eight different continents each with its peculiar climate, geographical conditions and settlements. The amazingly gorgeous and very detailed world is a right pearl of this Pocket PC game – try not to forget about the real quest when marveling at the pictorial views!

But the World of Arvale is certainly more than just a gorgeous decor. It is a living world with its own tales and riddles. The man you accidentally meet in a village may turn out to be an outcast lord from another continent, and what looks like an ordinary stick may really be a mage staff lost ages ago and now recovered by you. Interact with more than 500 NPCs and hundreds of objects to get to know the tale of this enthralling world. Cut scenes unveiling some parts of the plot will help you find your bearings and choose on what to do next.

The game is tightly packed with action: away from each other from the main line, there are lots of side quests and additional puzzles. Travel through space and time, engage in innumerable games of fate and feel the right freedom of an adventure. Your fate depends on the path you choose, and so does the ending of the game. Fighting monsters and villains, rescuing princesses and collecting ancient artifacts – the whole epic hero pack of activities in one game on your PDA!

All the diamonds and pearls of the plot and gameplay are artfully set into a mount of wonderful visual and signal effects. Hear the whistle of the wind in the rich green leaves and delight in the ambience of the game background with more than 125 signal effects and a total of 27 soundtracks. The plain colours of the game and incredible visual effects will make you want to play again and again – luckily, there are three levels of difficulty to choose from.

Well-matched with all current Pocket PCs, this version requires a Windows Mobile 2003 or newer device. Thousands of users have by now tried the game; join them by downloading a trial version to lift the veil of mystery covering the tale and come back for the full version.

An immense world that has its own spirit awaits a hero that will take the challenge and face the evil in the greatest battle of all. This game is certainly worth the 40 hours (or even more) you’ll spend glued to your Pocket PC as well as the money it expenditure. Arvale II – Ocean of Time 4.0 is truly an ocean of joyful and fascinating time.
