Todays electronics world presents a host of new devices for Comprehensive Position System (GPS) options. The advantage of a handheld GPS system is that it is usually lighter and can be held in one hand, is portable and doesnt need to be installed to connect with automotive wiring. This innovation is the equivalent to the distinction between the car phone and the cellular phone of the mid 1990s, but the only difference is that the car phone wasnt in any way stuck-up to the hand held device. With GPS systems, its a trade off. Installed units are more pricey, but usually have substantially more features in addition to just a larger screen.

When selecting a handheld device, you may want to consider how often you use the unit and how many features you will truly need to satisfy your demands. One consideration would be how large of a unit are you willing to tolerate. A touch pocket size might be acceptable, but might trade off on screen size. Another would be choosing a system that can give you the distance and direction to where you are going based upon your current reference point.

A system that uses manifold parallel channels assures you that manifold satellites are verifying your position to give you the most rapid response time on fixes of your current location. The number of markers, or way points, is another prime consideration. A system should use UTM grid maps or local maps which are quite ordinary. Having a system that can store manifold routes is also a plus.

Physical features that are vital, other than size, are whether or not the system is waterproof or how harsh the system is. Accidents do happen, so if a bottle of water or merely dropping the device one time is going to make the unit inoperable, a more durable model may be necessary. Having a backlit show is a must if you are driving in low light conditions such as nighttime or if you are under lots of vegetation. Because backlighting consumes extensive amounts of power, battery life has to be a prime consideration prior to buy. Lastly, have the person selling you the device show you how to use the device as many are not that self explanatory.

Many units also incorporate dead reckoning which uses the distance between sensors, often cellular phone towers, calibrating signal loss to determine the speed and direction of a moving vehicle.

Handheld GPS The Power To Navigate

If you travel a lot using several different modes of transportation then you probably are looking for a handheld GPS to help you find your way. Locating a source of discount handheld GPS units can be a problem. Being just a small bit larger than a ordinary cell phone, handheld GPS receivers offer the ability to navigate to any location on earth. When not in use you can place in its holster ready for the next use.A quality handheld GPS unit can range from less than $100 to as high as $2,000. A excellent quality unit with the best features will cost you about $500.00.

Manufactures that commonly offer handheld GPS systems contain Cobra, Magellan, Garmin, Lowrance and Bushnell. Lowrance offers the best prices for handheld GPS systems that contain monochrome coloring. Their cheapest model is only $63.99, but we do not recommend buying a gray scale or black and white show. Unfortunately, Lowrance is not the best choice when it comes to colorized GPS handhelds, as their prices, (which can be over $1,000) are nearly pricey as more well-known Garmin or Magellan brands. For colorized handheld GPS, it is best to go with Cobra, (with their cheapest colorized unit costing only $922) and Bushnell, (whose cheapest colorized unit expenditure only $500). Bushnell is a new manufacture of GPS. But they offer unique GPS aerial photo mapping and weather tracking features.

Where can one buy a handheld GPS systems at a discount price? http://Amazon.com is one place that offers dozens of discounts on innumerable brands of handheld GPS systems. Some of their handheld GPS systems are offered at a reduction rate as high as 41%. Others are discounted through special rebates. If this is not enough of a discount, one can try an online auction site. In view of the fact that sellers on most auction sites are not professional vendors like Amazon. Usually they are just selling their used personal units allowing them to offer more in terms of price negotiation. It is not uncommon to buy discount handheld GPS systems at hundreds even thousands below retail price when purchasing from online auction sites.

Manufactures that market a large number discount handheld GPS receivers are: Cobra, Lowrance and Bushnell. These and other brands can be bought from sites like http://Amazon.com or online auctions. Doing your homework and searching carefully you should not have any excuse for buying an overpriced handheld GPS system. Initially it might seem nice to get the most pricey, most ordinary brand-name handheld GPS available. But,if you can get all the features they need from a discount GPS system. The bottom line is that discount handheld GPS systems will function in the manner and have most of the same features as any retail priced handheld GPS receiver. A excellent handheld GPS receiver is a fantastic travel necessity that will open the whole world to you, don’t leave home without it.

James Kesel, MS is the Publisher of GPS Auto Tracker providing information on discount handheld GPS and the latest GPS Tracking and Navigation systems.
