Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Features To Look For in Your Handheld GPS System
Todays electronics world presents a host of new devices for Comprehensive Position System (GPS) options. The advantage of a handheld GPS system is that it is usually lighter and can be held in one hand, is portable and doesnt need to be installed to connect with automotive wiring. This innovation is the equivalent to the distinction between the car phone and the cellular phone of the mid 1990s, but the only difference is that the car phone wasnt in any way stuck-up to the hand held device. With GPS systems, its a trade off. Installed units are more pricey, but usually have substantially more features in addition to just a larger screen.
When selecting a handheld device, you may want to consider how often you use the unit and how many features you will truly need to satisfy your demands. One consideration would be how large of a unit are you willing to tolerate. A touch pocket size might be acceptable, but might trade off on screen size. Another would be choosing a system that can give you the distance and direction to where you are going based upon your current reference point.
A system that uses manifold parallel channels assures you that manifold satellites are verifying your position to give you the most rapid response time on fixes of your current location. The number of markers, or way points, is another prime consideration. A system should use UTM grid maps or local maps which are quite ordinary. Having a system that can store manifold routes is also a plus.
Physical features that are vital, other than size, are whether or not the system is waterproof or how harsh the system is. Accidents do happen, so if a bottle of water or merely dropping the device one time is going to make the unit inoperable, a more durable model may be necessary. Having a backlit show is a must if you are driving in low light conditions such as nighttime or if you are under lots of vegetation. Because backlighting consumes extensive amounts of power, battery life has to be a prime consideration prior to buy. Lastly, have the person selling you the device show you how to use the device as many are not that self explanatory.
Many units also incorporate dead reckoning which uses the distance between sensors, often cellular phone towers, calibrating signal loss to determine the speed and direction of a moving vehicle.

Mobile Ringtones – Look in the History
Ringtones is one of the most ordinary and age-ancient features embedded in mobile phones. It has made its presence felt in view of the fact that the birth of mobile handsets and has evolved from simple monotone to full track songs. Just imagine if we had to hear these monotones throughout the existence of cell phones, it would have become very irritating for us to listen to that single tone all the time. But thanks to the ringtone format technology, today ringtones are available in innumerable formats for our convenience.
The first commercial mobile ring tone was made and delivered in Finland in 1998. It was when a Finnish mobile operator Radiolinja had begun with their downloadable mobile ring tone service called Harmonium. The Harmonium comprised of tools for general broadcast to start monophonic ring tones and a means to deliver them over-the-air (OTA) via SMS to a mobile handset and to bill customer on their phone bill. These ringtones supported only one tone at a time at varying pitches. Most of the first generation mobile phones were embedded with this kind of monophonic ringtones. These ringtones were available in innumerable formats depending on the phone model. One of the most ordinary formats for monophonic ringtones was RTTTL, which was in a text format and could be sent over-the-air (OTA) to a mobile handset via SMS. Most of the early versions of Nokia handset contain ringtones in this format. Some of the cell phones also included melody composer software that enabled us to start our own ringtones with the help of “keypress editor”. At this stage, other manufacturers developed their own formats like eMelody and imelody by Ericsson, and KWS by Kyocera’s and many more.
After the monophonic phase, came in the polyphonic ringtones, which are embedded in nearly all the recently launched handsets of major companies. These ringtones have been originated from Japan circa 2001. They are different from monophonic ringtones because they enable different types of notes to be played at the same time. These ringtones were most commonly found in MIDI formats. But, later on, other formats like SP-Midi and SMAF had also evolved.
Lastly, the third generation ringtones known as “truetones” or “realtones” are ringtones encoded with high fidelity formats such as MP3, AAC or WMA format. Truetones allow hi-fi recordings like vocals, to be used as a ringtone. The first format of truetones was AMR-WB, which were incorporated into Nokia handsets around 2004. This format allowed the extracts from the first recording or master track to be used as a ringtone, whereas the other two were purely instrumental. This is one of the reasons, why truetones have an edge over monophonic and polyphonic ringtones. It is also one of the medium used by the music industry to generate revenue, as extracts of the marks are often released as tones before the singles, in order to promote the album in the market.
Initially, ringtones were only available for download by the service providers and broadcast were charged for it. But thanks to the World Wide Web, Bluetooth and infrared technologies, getting ringtones is a much simpler task now.

An Unbiased Look at Cellphone Companies: Alltel
Unlike many other cell phone companies that have several calling plans, Alltel Wireless offers only three plans. The Total Freedom Plot is ideal for persons who travel extensively on business and need to keep in touch with clients and the home office, as well as family. It provides coast to coast coverage within the United States with no long distance or wandering charges.
You can get between 200 and 3000 anytime minutes, 1000 night and weekend minutes and 1000 mobile to mobile home minutes. The cost for this Alltel plot ranges between $39.99 and $299.99 a month depending on the amount of anytime minutes you choose. The cost per minute for calls over your plot minutes is between $.40 and $.20, again depending on the level of anytime minutes chosen.
Alltel relies on its National Freedom Plot to provide subscribers in most medium to large cities with coverage. But, subscribers in smaller cities and rural areas or making calls to these places may incur unexpected charges. The benefit, but, is more anytime minutes in the same price range as in the Total Freedom Plot. For instance the National Freedom Plot gives 450 minutes for $39.95, while â??Total Freedomâ? gives only 200 for the same amount.
The â??Greater Freedomâ? plot is Alltel is offering to the casual user who does not do a lot of roving or who is considering replacing their ordinary home phone with an Alltel cell phone.

Alltel cell phone plans all offer the same basic features such as voice mail, caller ID, 3-way calling, call waiting, call forwarding and 411 information. Be cautious about these features, some of them are not covered by all levels of the plans and these charges can add up quickly. Recent investigate by Consumer Reports show that these seemingly minor add ons can add significant charges to your monthly bill. You need to make sure you know what your coverage area is, what is considered wandering and what the charges for these services are.

With approximately 12 million customers and an estimated 8 billion dollars in once a year revenues, Alltel has fine tuned their calling plans to insure that they are simple to know. This simplicity has been a strong catalyst for the sales and endurance of this company.
Phones offered by Alltel are amongst the best on the market.

Part I – What Do You Most Look for When Selecting a Business Cell Phone
What features/factors do you consider most vital when choosing a business cell phone….and why?
I questioned this question of a rather large business networking group …. and you can estimate the answers were all over the board. There were some similarities and some fascinating differences too.
Here’s a few for your education and enjoyment:
* “When I had to choose one, I looked one with full qwerty, touchscreen, windows mobile so I could run word, excel and one that was simple to sync with my outlook and has a full browser.
I chose the HP 6945 communicator that has, above the mentioned features, GPS and built in camera.
I use it a lot, and I mean A LOT, and I´m completely satisfied with it.”
* “How well does it hear signal, how do I signal to callers as well as how do they signal to me. Does it sync with chat wirelessly – email, contacts, calendar. Size and speed. Can I use my voice to dial by contact name or number. Lastly – what is the monthly service bill?”
* “It depends on your business requirements. In the past, our requirements has been excellent service, excellent connectivity, less drops, excellent value for money, and excellent service. Yes, service is vital.
We also have no need for picture phones, music players, video players, and a lot of the other bells and whistles. Our business has manifold phones, only one of which requires use of txt messaging. We turn off all the others.
We have been doing well with these. We have a simple LG vx3300 or LG vx3200, which has been an incredible phone for us.
We are currently researching an upgrade to a smart phone, which supports pda like features. We are a systems admin firm, we need support for secure bombard access to remote servers. We are looking at the blackberry. We currently use a palm device for some remote access. We are looking for full qwerty
keyboard.”
* “First of all, globally, I look at:
- Battery Autonomy: don’t want to be disconnected during an vital conversation
- Is there any kind of calendar, tasks and contact sync/management within a PC with an USB connection..?
- If travelling: triband or quadband phone (US, EUR, Asia…)
- Connexion options: bluetooth to connect accessories or use mobile as a modem, 3G or UMTS to connect to useful sites (directories, maps, email…)
- And if needed: a push email solution (treo, blackberry..)
So, you can find excellent phones in this list: Apple iPhone (not UMTS for the moment), Nokia N95 or any smartphones.”
* “I have a fetish about broadcast trying to claim that they are unable to get a hold of me, which I find more often than not, a cop-out. To combat this, in a business phone, I tend to gravitate toward smartphones with software upgradability, Wi-Fi, quad-band GSM, some sort of broadband capability
(EDGE, HSDPA, etc.) and a QWERTY keyboard boundary.
For now, I am using a Nokia E90. Although the phone is on the bulky side, it allows me to hear e-mail, surf the web, access enterprise mail, tether to my laptop, edit MS Office files, as well as, Skype (to keep my phone bill under control when overseas), and basic GPS functions. In emergencies, I
even use it to sub for a laptop.
Its not perfect by any means, particularly in size and form factor, but its probably one of the better phones I have had in a while.”
* “It would be the Apple logo. Because the iPhone reaches further into my workflow than others can, that workflow being mac and online services based. There is no better alternative.
Perhaps for corporate investigate purposes you could swing buying both a Mac mini and an iPhone, for the cost of another high end business phone.
Just as a heads up (my having read some of the later entries now) the next release of iPhone software includes Microsoft Chat ActiveSync technology, including push email, push contacts/directories, push dates/calendar, and remote wipe/erase functionality and all that other excellent networking, VPN and centralised policies stuff.”
* “I like the BlackBerry 8320. Mainly because the calendar syncs up with chat/outlook. Not to mention its keys are simple enough to be used with one hand. The battery life is excellent as long as you dont go installing GoogleTalk or Gmail as a third party software that continually goes out to the web. The only thing this needs to be a perfect device is the tethering capability. There are ways around it but its not designed to be an simple thing.”
* “I’m still looking for the Holy Grail of cell phones!
It naturally has to function well as a cell phone. But if it could also function as my laptop, GPS, and media player for travels, it would then become invaluable.
The iPhone is very close. It has the phone, VM, messaging, media and usability down quite well. But, it’s not 3G (yet), so connection throughput can be improved dramatically. The GPS is done through triangulating cell towers instead of a satellites (not nearly as quick or accurate).
On the very positive side, browsing with an iPhone has taken the device to the lead for business users. You get a real browser in Safari that blows IE mobile away.
Our MarketShare stats are showing that over 1 in every 1000 page views browsed today is coming from an iPhone. That’s incredible!
Anyway, can’t wait till the 3G / GPS version comes out – rumors are that it will be soon.
Side note – I have an HTC on the AT&T network, and am browsing quite successfully with Opera Mobile currently. Fantastic solution as well!”
More real life comments on the question will be shared in Part II of this series. So stay tuned.

A Quick Look At Discount Cell Phones And Acessories
As an Entrepreneur and a person that has a home business I know how vital it is to have the right products and the best products at a available to me. I try to be consistent in where I buy my products, but hey, when a new website comes along and it really pulls at my interest I usually will switch over to the new-found site. High prices don’t everlastingly mean high quality at other sites online, and this is the type of thing you take notice at with these stores that aren’t classified as discount, but by looking at their prices you would reckon they were at a discount. Low-cost prices also dont necassarily mean low quality! One of the main things I absolutely could not live with out is my PDA. It has my life stored on it, every friend, every business contact, every piece of information I ever need is on that thing!
Like I said above, low-cost prices don’t necessarily mean low-cost quality, especially if they are the same brand you would buy for double the first price than at the cheaper store. Hey, I’m all about saving money. If I can go to store A and buy a BlackBerry Curve 8320 Smartphone Titanium for $99 or go to store B and buy a BlackBerry Curve 8320 Smartphone Titanium for $400, which one do you really reckon I’m going to pick!!! Plus on a lot of these discount cell phone sites you can get major discounts by doing things you were by now going to do anyway, like sign up for a new service plot or better yet they have huge rebates, like $100 off a phone. Its pretty incredible when you reckon about it!
And just because these cell stores are cheaper does not mean they wont have the same brands as everyone else does! The less pricey site also offers the same cellphones and acessories as the huge whig stores such as:
Bluetooth – Blackberry, AT&T, LG Vu, Motorola, Samsung, Nokia, Sony, T-mobile, Kyocera
Camera Phones – Blackberry, Motorola, AT&T, Pantech, LG Voyager, Sony Ericson, Palm Centro
Broadband Cards – Verizon, Sony, Pantech, Kyocera , Sierra, Novatel
Prepaid – Starcom, Nokia, Sony, Samsung, LG
If I continue to go on, I will be here forever. From the bottom of your heart these sites offer anything you will ever need. So what other categories do these sites offer? Well Ill just give you a small teaser and then you can go check it out yourself! You can look forward to things like flip phones, video, web enabled and wi-fi! I mean really, have you heard a part I have made yet that wouldn’t make you want to shop at these cheaper stores? I don’t really reckon there is a negative aspect to these stores, at all, at all. Go check them out yourself. Pick a product or an item you bought from one of the huge whig stores and compare it to the less pricier one. I’m sure you will see, exactly what I see!
