Breaking Windows – Sony Ericsson and Samsung Windows Mobile Phones Put to the Test
In the world of smartphones, it’s not unfair to say that Windows Mobile is one of the premier operating systems that mobile phones can be built around. There are two huge contenders for the title of best Windows Mobile phone, at the minute: the Sony Ericsson X1 and the Samsung i900 Omnia. But which one is best? Let’s place them to the test and find out!
Samsung i900 Omnia – Windows Mobile for the masses
Announced a couple of days before Apple launched the iPhone 3G (hmm, do I spot a bit of attention-grabbing), the Samsung i900 Omnia is a perfectly powerful, incredibly excellent-looking mobile phone. Sitting within a sleek, metal bombard, it’s following the pattern of an increasing number of mobile phones, and stripping down the number of keys, focusing instead on just a touchscreen boundary. Also, like an increasing number of mobile phones, Samsung have taken Windows Mobile, and place their own boundary on top of it, making the insides look as excellent as the outside (not literally, obviously. If you take a Samsung i900 Omnia away from each other, you’ll find cables and circuit boards, which aren’t noted for being sexy). Not only has it got a slick boundary, but the hardware features are spot on, with 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, and GPS. It’s honest to say the Samsung i900 Omnia is one of the most powerful mobile phones going.
Sony Ericsson X1 – the first of a new breed
The Sony Ericsson X1 is a mobile phone of firsts, in more than one way. For one thing, it’s the first phone in Sony Ericsson’s new Xperia range of mobile phones. For another, it’s the first EVER Sony Ericsson mobile phone to be built around Windows Mobile (with the nearly obligatory personalised boundary on top). Finally, it’s first mobile phone (not just from Sony Ericsson, from anyone), to feature the innovative ‘arc slider’ design. What’s that? Well, when you slide out the screen, to unveil the QWERTY keyboard, it doesn’t slide in a honest line, but instead, it arcs slightly upwards, angling the screen so you can see it more easily, while you’re typing. Massive kudos go to Sony Ericsson for that, in view of the fact that it’s such a useful, gifted feature, I genuinely can’t believe we’ve never seen it on any other mobile phones before now. In terms of hardware on the Sony Ericsson X1, you get a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA and WiFi, GPS and that aforementioned QWERTY keyboard, all wrapped up in a gorgeous (and I mean properly gorgeous) metal body.
Sony Ericsson or Samsung – which should YOU buy?
So, when it comes down to it, which of these two super-powered mobile phones should you drop your cash for? Should you go for the sleek, slim Samsung, or should you go for the more functional, but equally sexy Sony Ericsson? If you compare the two mobile phones, some conclusions should become apparent. For example, take the cameras in both mobile phones. The Samsung plainly wins that fight, as it has a much privileged res camera than the Sony Ericsson. But, after the camera, the Sony Ericsson REALLY comes into its own. The simple fact that the Sony Ericsson X1 has a QWERTY keyboard is a massive plus point over the Samsung, even if the Samsung is the slimmer of the two mobile phones. The keyboard adds that much more ease of use, that it’s basically an essential feature. Finally, there are two areas that the Sony Ericsson absolutely canes the Samsung in. First, the speed. The Sony Ericsson X1 appears one of the fastest, smoothest Windows Mobile phones I’ve ever seen, and although the Samsung is excellent, it’s just not quite AS excellent. Finally, there’s the screen. The Samsung has a slightly better one, but the Sony Ericsson has FOUR times the screen resolution, completely dwarfing the Samsung. And for that reason, of these two gorgeous mobile phones, the Sony Ericsson X1 is the absolute, and outright winner!

Sony Ericsson – Redefining The Mobile Phone
Thanks to Sony Ericsson’s product innovation, mobile phones today will never be the same again. It used to be bland, dull and pretty much useless outside of being confined to what a bare communications device on the road is. Now, it’s a mobile doohickey many broadcast are entertained with while on the road. It has become quite useful as an MP3 player and a camera phone.
These features inherited the Sony expertise in consumer electronics market with its personal stereo and Cybershot products in the music and imaging departments, respectively. You have the W and K products that have cemented the two features the market has come to expect and taken for contracted in mobile phones.
A Small Description
But it didn’t start out rosy for the company. As a merged company from a joint venture between the world’s leading consumer electronics powerhouse fro Japan, Sony and the Swedish telecommunications chief Ericsson, it struggled to compete with the incredible Nokia and Motorola between 2001 when it started and 2003 before making a profit in 2004.
But even prior to the merger, Sony had been a marginal maker of mobile phones that had a negligible following in the market and wanted to branch out despite suffering massive commercial loses in the mobile phone business. Ericsson had a partnership with General Electric to make its presence felt in the US markets and had a much better mobile phone making reputation as the world’s third largest mobile phone maker after Nokia and Motorola.
But as fate would have it, a fire that gutted its Philips supplier in 2000 basically brought it to its knees that nearly got them to abandon the mobile phone business. Enter Sony with a mission not only to save Ericsson, but to form a business alliance that would start better synergies in taking advantage of Sony’s consumer electronics muscle and Ericsson’s technical savvy in the telecommunication’s industry.
To observers, this was the right strategic marriage that could unseat Nokia and Motorola from their perch notwithstanding the fact that an earlier merger between Sony’s rival fellow citizen Toshiba and the German telecommunications giant Siemens fizzled out at around the time Sony and Ericsson made its pact.
The fusion between the two giants was best showcased in the highly successful P800 introduced in 2002 and was the successor to the Ericsson R380. It had been designed and produced by Ericsson but was marketed under the new Sony Ericsson merger and was considered the world’s first touchscreen smartphone with the largest color show.
The P800 was a landmark smartphone that defined the path and genre for succeeding mobile phones. It also made the flagship P series of handsets that segmented the market of mobile phones to cater to the upscale end of the demographic spectra.
With PDA function, a camera and touchscreen, the P800 would prove to be seminal in the evolution of the mobile phone form the bland basic communications tool on the road into a business phone with entertainment features that we now take for contracted as de rigueur features on a mobile phone. The rest, as they say, is description.

Nokia 5800 and Nokia N97 – the New Wave of Touchscreen Mobile Phones
Anyone who likes touchscreen phones should be excited; the most recognised name in the game has waded in with not one, but TWO mobile phones: the sexy Nokia 5800 and the really awesome Nokia N97.
The description of touchscreen phones – best left in the past…
Many broadcast are under the incorrect assumption that the Nokia 5800 is the first touchscreen mobile phone Nokia have ever made. It’s not. The opposite’s right, because there’s been several touch-based phones to wear the Nokia badge. Starting at the 7700, the world has seen a few Nokia mobile phones which work by you prodding and poking the screen. They had a relatively huge (for the time) touchscreen in ordinary, but the other feature they had in ordinary, unfortunately, was that they were utterly hideous. Just one of persons handsets, the 6708, showed a modicum promise, but it was destined exclusively to be sold in China, and thus, it never saw the light of day in Britain. Unfortunately, that meant that the phones we got were utter, and complete bobbins.
But, these terrible mental images have all been removed due to the announcement of a pair of new Nokia mobile phones, both of which come with touch-sensitive displays, and both of which are much, much sexier…
Nokia 5800 – music, rhythm, who oculd question for anything more…
The first phone up is a completely new entrant into Nokia’s Xpress line of music mobile phones, the mouth-watering Nokia 5800. This one’s pretty obviously built for music and video; you can tell by the separate XpressMedia touch-key that pops up a list of shortcuts to music, videos, the web, and more. Then, of course, the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touchscreen, to really muck about with persons different media files. Basically, the Nokia 5800 was designed to be a teeny handheld entertainment centre, and as music devices go, this is just about the sexiest. The Nokia 5800 also comes with a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, so that it’s a wonderful all-round mobile phone, in addition to being a brilliant media box. Oh, and it’s got a strap to clip on an imitation guitar plectrum. Pointless, but brilliant.
Despite all persons features, the Nokia 5800 is very certainly a mid-range device; it isn’t, nor will it ever be, a full-stout top-end monster. That role falls to a different mobile…
Nokia N97 – the Hero of mobile phones?
With the Nokia 5800 all set to bring touch-based mobile phones to the mid-range market, that leaves a fantastic huge gap at the absolute top-endof the product range; well, there IS a touch-based mobile phone on its way to take its place as the top-end powerhouse: the utterly mind-blowing Nokia N97. This takes the same Symbian S60 Touch boundary and crams it within the body of a proper, full-on smartphone. So it has a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a kick out QWERTY keypad, and the camera’s been upgraded to 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, in a very settled way, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it’s genuinely as powerful as the rumours had us believe, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and built-in Flash, so that you have an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Place simply the Nokia N97 is awesome. It gleefully relieves itself over other mobile phones and while the Nokia 5800 angles firmly for the mid-range, I’m predicting that the Nokia N97 will utterly DOMINATE the world next year!

Nokia N96 – Say Hello to the Most Anticipated Mobile Phone of the Year!
Based on what I’ve been hearing from the average mobile phone user on the road, there’s one mobile phone that’s has got broadcast excited like no other (even more than the iPhone or the first Google phone, according to our customers): the Nokia N96. Read on to find out why!
Nokia Nseries mobile phones – a brief description of awesomeness
Who remembers the days when mobile phones were hideous, brick-like things, that did, basically, nothing? Terrible times, they were, believe me. In view of the fact that then, of course, numerous mobile phones have come along to enlighten us all about what handsets can do, and arguably one of the most ordinary product ranges, from that respect, is the world-well-known Nokia Nseries, that started way back when, with the triad of the N70, N90 and N91. Even just from persons first three mobile phones, it was clear what Nokia had in mind for the Nseries; they weren’t going just for phones, they wanted full-on mobile computers, convergence devices that made calls, took photos, let you get full internet access and so on. They may have gone down specific routes for specific mobile phones (Nokia N76 trying to make convergence sexy, anyone?), but the basic formula ( top-end phone features + top-end multimedia + top-end camera + whatever other features you can shoehorn into a mobile phone) has everlastingly been there.
Never has that been more right than in the groundbreaking new, mind-bendingly cool Nokia N96, reckoned by some to be the new king of multimedia mobile phones.
Nokia N96 – a shopping list of all the coolest features
Where to commence, with a mobile phone as cool as the Nokia N96?
How about we start with the first thing most broadcast question about when they see a new mobile phone: what’s the camera like on the Nokia N96? Coming in at 5 megapixels, and packed with loads of extras like autofocus, flash, and Carl Zeiss lenses, it’s certainly a top-ender, and one of the best 5 megapixel shooters out there. The other features don’t disappoint any, with GPS and HSDPA internet access, making the Nokia N96 one of the most feature-packed mobile phones out there. But it’s with multimedia that the Nokia N96 really shines, in view of the fact that the video playback is some of the best I’ve seen on ANY mobile phone, it has 16Gb of memory to store tons of video clips, and it supports DVB-H mobile TV. It gets better though, because the Nokia N96 is one of the few mobile phones on the market that has the BBC iPlayer, let you get on demand to all the BBC’s best TV shows, wherever you are!
You even get a small kick-stand on the back, so you can stand the Nokia N96 up to mind it!
Nokia N96 – is it really as excellent as it’s cracked up to be?
Ok, so the Nokia N96 is advanced, but is it really the mobile phone you should drop your cash to buy? Well, there’s no denying it’s sexy. Very sexy. It’s easily one of the glossiest, best-looking mobile phones on the earth, I reckon, and it’s certainly going to catch your eye. But it’s not just about looks, and power-wise, this gorgeous beastie from Nokia is going to give you a lot to play with. Ok, sure, it’s an pricey phone, but you get what you pay for, without a doubt, and the Nokia N96, in my opinion, is one of the few mobile phones that is worth the asking price!

Touchscreen Mobile Phones Go to War – Blackberry Storm Vs Nokia 5800
It’s time for what may seem to be an odd contest-up today, but when you reckon about it, these two particular mobile phones are really pretty evenly matched, and pitting them against each other DOES make sense. So, let’s settle down mind the action as the Blackberry Storm takes on the Nokia 5800.
Nokia 5800 – touch, feel, play
The first phone in this battle’s a really new member of Nokia’s Xpress range of music mobile phones, the gorgeous Nokia 5800. This phone is quite obviously made for music and media, as it has a separate XpressMedia button that pops up a list of links to music, videos, the web, and more. Then, of course, the Nokia 5800 has a 3.2 inch touch-sensitive show, to let you use all your media files. Essentially, the Nokia 5800 was made to be a small handheld jukebox and movie player, and as music devices go, this is just about the prettiest. The Nokia 5800 also has, built-in, a 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA internet access and sat-nav, making it a wonderful all-rounder, as well as a brilliant media box. Oh, and it has a strap to fasten on a fake guitar plectrum. That rocks.
It’s also the first mobile phone to use the new Symbian S60 Touch platform, making it the first of a generation. So, with that in mind, let’s pit it against another phone that uses a groundbreaking new, touchscreen platform: the gorgeous Blackberry Storm.
Blackberry Storm – more than just a storm in a teacup
Up against the Nokia 5800 is the new Blackberry Storm, and although it might seem an odd contest-up, in fight terms, it’s not really as daft as it sounds. For example, both the Nokia 5800 and the Blackberry Storm are the first mobile phones to feature the touch versions of their respective operating systems, with the Blackberry Storm being based, obviously, on the Blackberry OS (well, the touch version of it, anyway). The Blackberry Storm also has a 3 megapixel camera, similar to the 5800, and it has a wealth of multimedia options. Both mobile phones also forgo a physical keyboard, but the Blackberry Storm adds a touch new to its virtual keyboard (well, to its boundary as a whole): a moving, clickable screen. That’s right, the whole screen is clickable like a giant button, making ‘accidentally starting applications by touching the incorrect icon’ a thing of the past. Of course, like all of its predecessors, the Blackberry Storm lives for email, as well, and its push email, just like its ancestors, lets you keep in touch with your emails, no matter where.
Nokia 5800 vs Blackberry Storm – which one should YOU buy?
So, which of these two mobile phones should you go for? Should you go for the more media-oriented Nokia 5800? Or possibly you like the email capabilities of the Blackberry Storm? Well, to a particular extent, it WILL come down to what you wan to use it for. The Blackberry Storm is undoubtedly the more competent of the two mobile phones for email. Well, come on, it has Blackberry email access, surely that was never in doubt! But, when it comes to media, the Nokia 5800 is plainly the more competent, with more colours no screen, smoother playback, better music quality, and so on. But, there is one thing you need to know about the Blackberry Storm, because its largest strength is also its largest flaw: that clickable touchscreen. It’s innovative, it completely removes the possibility of catching the incorrect icon on screen, and it’s not been seen on any other mobile phones before, giving it cool factor. BUT (and it’s a huge but), you have to really press down on it; when typing out an email on the Blackberry Storm, it’s going to absolutely ruin your thumb muscles after a while, and quite away from each other from demanding your hands quicker, it also makes it marginally slower to type that email. So, given the fact that it may well physically hurt to use the Storm after a while, the winner, for me, has to be the Nokia 5800.
