GPS simply stands for “comprehensive positioning system”, and GPS navigation is a program by which maps are made to handbook you towards your destination. But the benefit over a traditional paper map is that this is an electronic device which can offer your other functions besides simply telltale you where you are.

The technology has come a long way in recent years, and has greatly grown in popularity. This is due to the fact that it is extremely useful for getting places you are unsure of, for anyone who travels for work or holidays.

It works by connecting the electronic device to satellites. These satellites send signals to the devices, which then decode them to find out the exact location of the user. Not only this but the device will also tell you the speed in which you are travelling and how long it should take you to reach your destination.

Whilst it has become ordinary in mainstream use, it was once only used in the military in the mid 1960s though has steadily evolved to become a way for anyone to find where they are getting to easily and without stress.

Why might you need a GPS system? Well in today’s modern life many jobs call for travel to different places by car, and this can become especially stressful if you don’t know exactly where you are going. Stopping to question broadcast for directions can be hard and time consuming, so knowing exactly where to go will really help to save you some time and make things less stressful. It will tell you exactly how to reach your destination, and how to get back again once you have finished.

When looking for a GPS system there are many you could choose. This will all depend on your specific needs. Some devices are cheaper than others and require less technical experience to use. Others will have more features, importance it might take a while for you to get used to them all.

If you want unit with all possible features then you will have to opt for a more pricey unit. This will be well worth it if you travel a lot or are plotting a driving holiday. They will provide you with a digital show that shows approaching roads as well as the traffic condition in particular areas, and will usually even contain a voice suitable to tell you out loud (if you wish) where to turn and when to mind your speed (and so on). All of these features work together to make it extremely simple to reach your destination.

They are not only used for reaching your destination but they are also used for tracking, which is why it is more and more commonly seen in mobile phones. This helps broadcast to be located if they become lost. Whatever you want it for, you should do some investigate into the machines that fit your individual needs. Once you find a system you will wonder how you ever did without it!

GPS Navigation Devices: the Useful Electronic Companions

Comprehensive navigation satellite system is a ordinary term for satellite navigation system. GNSS provides accurate monitoring which is useful for civil navigation. Now-a-days, Comprehensive Positioning System (GPS) is the only system, which is a fully functional comprehensive navigation satellite system. The system utilises a constellation of at least 24 medium earth orbital satellites. These satellites transmit precise microwave signals to a GPS receiver. The system enables the receiver to determine its location, speed, direction and time.

Generally speaking, GPS System is a navigation system. Earlier these systems were used only by defense personnel. Nowadays the system is also used by the civilians. One need not subscribe to any particular service provider to use these systems.

The GPS antenna is basically a signal amplifier. This amplifier converts one signal into another one. The antenna improves the quality of the received signals for transmission along a cable to a receiver for decoding. A coax cable is used to transfer signal information between the antenna and the receiver. These antennas can be of different shapes and sizes. There are two types of these antennas – the pole mounted and the patch type. The general pole-mounted antennas are shaped like a dome. The pole-mounting antennas are screwed on a threaded pole for mounting. The patch type antenna is a small flat bottomed device which is ideal for mounting on a windowsill.

To hear transmission from satellites, GPS antenna location is of high significance. The antennas hear transmission from as many satellites as possible, if they have a excellent clear view of the sky. A roof mounted antenna works best with a full 360-degree view of the sky. An antenna can also be fixed on the side of a building with a 180-degree view of the sky.

These receivers do a very significant job. They decipher the received signal. Nowadays numerous mobile phones are available with GPS technology included in them. Many mobile phones come with GPS tracking system in them. Mobile phone GPS uses a technology called helped comprehensive positioning system (AGPS) to locate the position of the user.

These receivers have a lot of practical uses. GPS tracking devices help a lot to track broadcast. These devices are very useful devices while vacationing in unknown places. Child tracking devices reduce the dread of losing a child in large crowds or while roving. Also using GPS tracking device you can keep track of elderly members of your family. If they wander off alone, they can easily be located. Also, you can track and find family and friends in crowded places as well.

GPS enabled mobile devices are most beneficial in the case of an emergency. Mobile phone GPS tracking can save many lives. For instance, a lost mountaineer can be located easily with the aid of these devices. You can also pay for the technology that turns your mobile phone into a GPS tracking device

A wide range of mobile phone GPS devices are available these days. You can choose a basic mobile phone model with GPS for emergency tracking. Portable navigation devices are very ordinary these days. Some of the most useful navigation devices are TomTom GO 720, Mio C520 Navigation Receiver and HP iPaq rx5900 Travel Companion. All these receivers are fantastic companions for the broadcast who are on constant moves.

Many broadcast are installing GPS navigation systems in their vehicles. It helps a lot in moving distant places. These navigation systems can help one in moving from one place to another with audible driving directions, colour maps and points of interest. You can locate your vehicle in a parking lot also. There are so many other advantages of these devices.

Innumerable online shopping portals are offering latest GPS tracking systems and mobile phones with GPS tracker. Just have a look at them and get latest doohickey from the comfort of your home.

GPS Navigation Systems have come a long way

Gps systems have come a long way in view of the fact that they were first designed for the US millitary. The first signal from NAVSTAR 1 was received on Feb. 22, 1978. NAVSTAR 1 was launched from Vandenberg Air Break down Base in California and was the first of 24 satellites that make up the Comprehensive Positioning System (GPS). The first generation of satellites that make up the Comprehensive Positioning Systems 24 satellites were launched between Feb. 22, 1978 and Oct. 9, 1985. In view of the fact that it First became operational the Comprehensive Positioning Systems has revolutionized the way America goes to war and provides a GPS system in which the world relies on for precise navigation.

The Comprehensive Positioning System’s constellation of orbiting satellites is managed by the United States Air Break down 50th Space Wing. The unit is the host wing at Schriever Air Break down Base, located in east Colorado Springs, Colorado. They are responsible for tracking and maintaining the command and control, warning, navigational, and communications satellites for Air Break down Space Command as well as the Comprehensive Positioning System satellites. Full Operational Capability was declared by NAVSTAR in April 1995 (NAVSTAR is an acronym for NAVigation Satellite Timing and Ranging, and is the official U.S. Regime name given to the GPS satellite system).

The US regime contracted the Comprehensive Positioning System available for civilian use in the late 1980s and with no subscription fees or setup charges to use the GPS system the civilian GPS market exploded, especially in the last decade. A new generation of sophisticated GPS satellites are replacing the older satellites and there are now 34 GPS satellites in orbit that provide combat capability for military applications and aircraft navigation aids. Civilian applications contain ATM’s, bank and stock market transactions as well as power grid management. Currently 31 of the 34 GPS satellites in orbit transmit navigation and timing signals to civilian and military users around the world.

Gps for civilian use

The civilian GPS system wasn’t everlastingly as it is today and the US military is still keeping the most accurate Comprehensive Positioning Systems available classified for national security. But GPS upgrades for two new civilian signals to enhanced user accuracy and reliability, particularly with respect to aviation safety were plotted in 1998. Then on May 2, 2000 “Selective Availability” was discontinued as a result of the 1996 executive order, allowing users to hear a non-degraded GPS signal globally, and in 2004 QUALCOMM announced the successful tests of helped GPS for mobile phones that led the way for the GPS aided cell phones that are widely used today.

In 2005, the first third generation GPS satellite was launched and started transmitting a second civilian signal for enhanced user performance. Then in September of 2007 the Air Break down completed a four-phase transition of the Comprehensive Positioning Systems ground segment to it’s new Architecture Evolution Plot. The ground segment’s provide command and control of the satellites and generates the navigation message for satellites to broadcast to the users GPS device to calculate their earth’s position. The new Gps satellites contain new high-powered, anti-jam military-code, along with other accuracy, reliability, and data integrity improvements for both civil and military users. This modernized version of the world’s greatest free helpfulness was designed to ensure the US has the most precise and secure positioning, navigation and timing capability through 2030.

Europe and Russia develop their own GPS

In 2004 the United States signed an agreement with the European Community establishing cooperation with Europe’s plotted Galileo system. Galileo is a comprehensive navigation satellite system (GNSS) that is currently being built by the European Union and is separate from but complimentary to the United States Comprehensive Positioning System. The European Union’s Galileo system should be operational by 2013. The European Community’s political aim is to provide an self-determining GPS system that the European nations can rely on in times of war or political disagreement, because both Russia or the USA could disable use of their national systems by others (through encryption).

The Russian GPS system GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system that was developed by the former Soviet Union and now operated for the Russian regime by the Russian Space Forces. Like the European GPS system the Russian GPS system also functions separate from but is complimentary to the United States Comprehensive Positioning System. Russia started launching satellites for their GPS system into space on October 12, 1982 and was completed in 1995. The system rapidly fell into disrepair fallowing the end of the Russian economy but in 2001 the Russian regime started restoring the system with hopes of restoring comprehensive coverage by the end of 2009.

GPS Systems today

Depending on the GPS unit a GPS receiver only needs a signal from 3-4 satellites to calculate the units position and will work in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or set up fees like with a cell phone to operate GPS receivers and although some GPS receivers have extra features like real time traffic updates that will have a monthly charge, some GPS receivers like Garmins Nuvi “T” series come with free live traffic for the life of the unit. Today’s GPS is extremely accurate thanks to their parallel multi-channel design. Garmin’s 12 parallel channel receivers are very quick to lock onto satellites when first turned on and they maintain a strong lock even in dense foliage or city’s with tall buildings because they continuously track signals from up to 12 satellites at any given time. Even if a 12 parallel channel GPS receiver loses signals from 8 satellites at once it will still function properly.

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) was developed by the Federal Aviation Administration to augment the Comprehensive Positioning System to improve its accuracy, integrity, and availability. WAAS was originally intended to enable aircraft to rely on GPS for all phases of running away, including the precision approach to airport’s within its coverage area. All though originally intended for aviation most GPS receivers today are WAAS-enabled including automotive, boating chartplotters and hand-held units. WAAS uses a network of ground based reference stations, in North America and Hawaii, to measure small variations in the GPS satellites’ signals. Measurements from these reference stations are routed to master stations and then they send correction messages to geostationary WAAS satellites. Persons satellites then broadcast the correction messages back to Earth, where WAAS-enabled GPS receivers use the correction data while computing their positions to improve accuracy. WAAS enabled GPS receivers are accurate to within 3 meters and that make them the most accurate GPS receivers for civilian use on the market today. In fact a WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can even give you directions right down to the lane your car is roving in (as long as the mapping program supports “lane help” directions) and With no additional equipment or fees required to take advantage of WAAS-enabled GPS receivers they are becoming as ordinary as cell phone’s.

Satellite Navigation With a Difference!

The Garmin, one of the world’s leading Sat Nav manufacturers, have just announced the Garmin Nuvifone. Now this is a mobile and Sat Nav with a difference – it has the same software as the Garmin Nuvi Sat Nav but with the added bonus of mobile phone features. Now quite a few phones these days have GPS/Sat Nav incorporated in them, but some of them are basic, pricey and do not have the voice directions (which is really quite vital!), Garmin have done the fantastic thing of simply count mobile phone features to their by now ordinary Sat Nav.

The Nuvifone will be 3G, have a music and video player, camera with video record and be completely touch controlled – so it’s hardly missing in the mobile stakes. Exact specifications are yet to be released, as the phone is not due out until late summer 2008, but that should be enough to flash the interest of business broadcast.

The GPS is obviously quite impressive on the Nuvifone, the main screen will have icons for Call, Search and View Map making it simple to navigate, so you can commence a journey or make a call home from the touch of a button. Garmin have stated that it’s GPS will seamlessly incorporate Google’s local search, allowing you access to local information and features based on your current position.

One particularly impressive feature is the way it can handle calls and GPS functions simultaneously. If you walking to your car and on a call you needn’t hang up to commence the Sat Nav feature to get you to your next meeting, you simply need to place the Garmin Nuvifone in it’s docking base and it will automatically turn on the GPS, bring up the navigation menu and transfer your call to hands-free. So you can rest assured that you will get to where you are going quickly, safely and within the law!

The Garmin Zumo 550 Motorcycle Gps. Motorcycle Navigation at It’s Finest

Motorcycle GPS is like auto GPS. It’s quick becoming an essential accessory for any biker who likes long rides without getting lost.

Because it’s not quite as simple to navigate on a motorbike. You can’t just hand the map over your shoulder to your girlfriend behind and question her to tell you where to turn. Navigating on a motorcycle involves stopping. You need to take the map out, work out where you’re going and place it away. While you’re bunged.

Not so excellent when it’s raining, for example, or on the side of a busy road, or even just when you’re in a real rush.

A excellent motorcycle GPS unit can take all that away and make motorcycle navigation a breeze. And the Garmin Zumo 55o is a excellent motorcycle GPS unit. A very excellent motorcycle GPS unit.

Why? Well first up is it’s design. It’s not an auto GPS device that’s adapted for use on a motorcycle. It’s designed specifically with the motorcyclist in mind. For example it has a simple user friendly touch screen with large icons so it can be operated on the ride with gloves on. And with the left hand.

And unlike someone using a car GPS, a motorcycle GPS unit has some other requirements for bikers as well. For example you’re trying to read the screen in the sun, so it’s usually harder to read.

Not the Garmin Zumo 550 motorcycle GPS. It’s designed to be readable from the saddle even in bright sunlight, so the motorcyclist doesn’t need to do contortions to read it. And it’s UV friendly so the sun won’t break it down. And it’s waterproof so the rain won’t kill it. And it’s fuel resistant too.

After all you don’t want your bike GPS to break down from a touch like the effects of the sun do you?

Another issue specific to motorcycle riders is the mount. In the past a excellent mount was quite in issue, and many motorbike riders had to adapt some type of car GPS mount to mount the motorcycle GPS unit on the handlebars, or anywhere.

But the Garmin Zumo 550 comes with it’s own motorcycle mount for the handlebars. And it’s trembling resistant too, an issue for bikers but not for car drivers. It’s got integrated speakers so you can listen to your directions via bluetooth technology so you don’t even need to look down.

City route-finder maps are loaded from the start so all your maps are by now right there. There’s a comprehensive database of points of interest like motels, fuel stops, restaurants and more, and you can even load your own points of interest, or maps.

with an XM subscription and an antenna you can even get real time traffic and weather and radio, so you can dodge all persons pesky traffic jams. Traffic jam ahead? Push a button and your Zumo will calculate a new route for you without even needing to get off your bike.

Use your phone via the 550, and you don’t even need to take off your gloves or helmet. And you get the voice commands right to your helmet too. Need to turn left soon? Just wait for the command. And why not upload your pet music and listen to that while you ride as well?

A excellent motorcycle GPS unit like the Garmin Zumo 550 will allow you to plot your rides, store your best rides and even share them with your friends. If you’ve found motorcycle navigation a drag in the past, invest in a fantastic motorcycle GPS unit and motorbike navigation becomes a breeze.

Find out more about motorcycle gps at Peter’s Website Motorcycle GPS Deals and find out about motorcycle gps accessories and more, including motorcycle gps mounts.
