Various Satellite Technologies for Communication and Entertainment

Nobody likes getting lost. Not only is it a waste of time, gas and energy, but it can also be quite frustrating. That is why when the first GPS (comprehensive positioning systems) were approved for civilian used at the end of the nineteen nineties broadcast rushed out to buy them. But as with any new technology, these early models were not especially consistent or accurate. In fact, it was not until the new millennium that military restrictions were lifted on civilian GPS units, which immediately increased the precision from 100 meters to 20 meters.

Nearly a decade later, the average GPS device can pinpoint your location nearly anywhere on earth. Their most ordinary attention, but, is simply as a guidance device for civilian vehicles. All you have to do is enter your starting location and your destination and you will hear detailed directions to anywhere you want to go.

Fortunately for consumers as GPS technology has improved and struggle in the industry has increase, prices have come down quite a bit. It is now possible to buy affordable, even low-cost GPS units from some of the top companies. Presently, the most ordinary brands contain: Bushnell, Garmin, Lowrance, and Magellan, just to name a few.

Where to Look?

The first place you should look for affordable GPS systems is on the internet. Oftentimes, companies will have promotional offers or deals for online shoppers. You may even qualify for free shipping.

Benefits

As we mentioned, GPS units are navigational devices that can help drivers get where they need to go more quickly than they ever imagined. In fact, all current models automatically calculate the shortest distance to your destination and provide detailed, step by step directions. Most models also feature audio instructions. That is, a voice will tell you when to turn and how far you must travel on a particular road before you have to make the next turn. This is an especially helpful feature because it means that the driver never has to take his eyes off the road to check the GPS screen for directions. Some of the more pricey devices will even let you know when to switch lanes for an upcoming turn.

Handheld GPS Systems

There are also handheld GPS devices that provide users with incredible amounts of information in a small rechargeable unit that can be taken just about anywhere. These GPS units are especially helpful for broadcast who delight in outdoor sports and activities like hiking, mountain biking, hunting or camping. So, even when you’re out in the wilderness and your cell phone gets no reception and you can’t call anyone, your Handheld GPS system will let you know exactly where you are as well as the shortest path home. And just like the GPS units that are used in vehicles, handheld devices are competitively priced.

Believe it or not, these days there are even GPS units that are sport specific. For example, there are devices for cyclists to let them know their speed, location, and distance traveled. There are even portable GPS units that can be used by golfers to tell them exactly how far they are from the hole.

That’s an dreadful lot of progress in just over a decade.

Satellite Navigation With a Difference!

The Garmin, one of the world’s leading Sat Nav manufacturers, have just announced the Garmin Nuvifone. Now this is a mobile and Sat Nav with a difference – it has the same software as the Garmin Nuvi Sat Nav but with the added bonus of mobile phone features. Now quite a few phones these days have GPS/Sat Nav incorporated in them, but some of them are basic, pricey and do not have the voice directions (which is really quite vital!), Garmin have done the fantastic thing of simply count mobile phone features to their by now ordinary Sat Nav.

The Nuvifone will be 3G, have a music and video player, camera with video record and be completely touch controlled – so it’s hardly missing in the mobile stakes. Exact specifications are yet to be released, as the phone is not due out until late summer 2008, but that should be enough to flash the interest of business broadcast.

The GPS is obviously quite impressive on the Nuvifone, the main screen will have icons for Call, Search and View Map making it simple to navigate, so you can commence a journey or make a call home from the touch of a button. Garmin have stated that it’s GPS will seamlessly incorporate Google’s local search, allowing you access to local information and features based on your current position.

One particularly impressive feature is the way it can handle calls and GPS functions simultaneously. If you walking to your car and on a call you needn’t hang up to commence the Sat Nav feature to get you to your next meeting, you simply need to place the Garmin Nuvifone in it’s docking base and it will automatically turn on the GPS, bring up the navigation menu and transfer your call to hands-free. So you can rest assured that you will get to where you are going quickly, safely and within the law!

Satellite Internet Vs. Cellular Wireless

If you live, work or trip in an area that cannot get broadband Internet like DSL or cable Internet, your options are generally dialup, satellite, cellular or wireless Internet access. While dialup, satellite and cellular Internet access are usually nationwide services, wireless Internet is a locally-operated service as the best technology today can only broadcast a wireless signal 10-28 miles.

Satellite Internet
Satellite Internet connects between a satellite receiver on your roof and a orbiting satellites. In order to use satellite Internet, you generally only need a clear exposure to the Southern sky. The two primary service providers are HughesNet and WildBlue.

In most cases, you will be required to buy and maintain the equipment (e.g. software updates). Satellite Internet is much quicker than dialup Internet, but download and upload speeds may vary greatly, and there typically is a latency period which makes VPN or voice-over-IP (VoIP) relations impractical.

Furthermore, additional expenditure are typically incurred for antenna re-alignments or adjustments.

Pros: Much quicker than dialup (20-40X quicker). Only requires a clear sight of the southern sky. Available at any location, no matter how remote.

Cons: Latency period which makes VPN or voice-over-IP (VoIP) relations impractical. Static IP address may be unavailable or available for an additional charge. Speeds may vary greatly. Threshold limits imposed (e.g. daily or monthly maximum treatment). May be affected by weather conditions.

Cost: Typical expenditure are $50-150/month. Equipment and installation expenditure $329-$600.

Cellular Phone Wireless (aka Mobile Broadband)
Several cell phone companies now offer high-speed wireless Internet via a cellular wireless card connected to your laptop. This cellular wireless card is not the same as a laptop wireless card used to connect to a home router or wifi network at a hotspot location (e.g. Starbucks).

A cellular wireless card works like dialup Internet access, but uses your cell phone to connect to the Internet. Cell phone wireless gives you the flexibility of connecting to the Internet from anywhere where you have cell phone signal. Speeds are much quicker than dialup but you cannot “share” your connection with other users, and you may incur per-minute charges (depending on the plot you select).

Pros: Much quicker than dialup (20-50X quicker). Available at any location where you have cell phone coverage. Fantastic for mobile professionals (e.g. realtors, field operators, etc.).

Cons: Internet relations drop (just like regular cell phone calls do). Cannot share the Internet connection with other computers. May incur per-minute charges (depending on the plot you select).

Cost: Typical expenditure are $50-150/month. Setup fees may be required.

The High Value Of Marine Satellite Phones

Imagine how Moby Dick would have turned out if marine satellite phones were available way back when. Really, it wouldn’t have been that different…Ahab would probably just spend a lot more time complaining to his phone service provider. Nevertheless, you are in a perfect position to take advantage of marine phones. Why do you need these phones? Why are they so different from cellular phones? Glad you questioned…

Marine satellite phones are based on satellite technology. This means that your phone antenna will communicate with an orbiting satellite and bring you service directly from that network. Satellite technology requires a clear view of the sky, and if there’s anything you do have when sailing on a boat out on the open sea, it is a clear view of the sky! A marine phones connection does work differently than a cell phone company. A cell phone company requires that the customer be nearby one of their established towers for service. Right, you could travel all the way around the country and still find a tower that will give you service. But, out on the ocean or in a large lake, this type of connection is not possible because there aren’t any towers located for miles. The same may be right for island or deep rural territories. Marine sat phones are not everlastingly guaranteed to work anywhere in the world. This is because there are laws against using satellite phones in innumerable countries. Besides, most companies choose to focus on just one country or region.

Marine phones can cost anywhere from $250 to $3,000 dollars, depending on the performance of the phone, the stability and clarity of the connection and any additional features. Other factors to consider contain Internet connectivity (a ordinary option offered by satellite phone companies) and the price per call. Some calls can cost fifteen cents to two dollars when placed from marine satellite phones or cost even more when made to a satellite phone from a mobile phone or landline phone. The excellent news is that the person you call from a sat phone usually doesn’t have to pay anything. So this is plainly a case of don’t call the “boss”, he’ll call you! Bear in mind that all satellite companies are trying to remain competitive and so may offer special deals on unlimited calling or even a prepaid plot.

There are many advantages that could come from using marine satellite phones. You could make vital phone calls at any time, hear phone calls at anytime or even talks while out on the ocean. Another advantage of Marine sat phones is that unlike cellular phones or terrestrial cell antennas, they are not especially prone to natural disasters. Natural disasters usually take out cell towers and terrestrial lines. With marine satellite phones, in view of the fact that the connection happens from space and your ship, you are everlastingly protected and connected.

If you frequently travel or must be available at all times even when you’re out at sea, then buying marine satellite phones is a shrewd go.

Talk Anywhere With Marine Satellite Phones

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if you could talk to anyone you wanted right from your boat or yacht? With marine satellite phones, what was once impossible is now possible. Satellite phones give you the ability to make a call or hear a call at practically any location on water.

Why satellite phones instead of cellular technology? Because cellular phone companies require that the user be within a particular distance of headquarters, or at least of the cell towers that have been established. Therefore, your cell phone will work in other states besides your home state because there are manifold towers set up all around urban areas. But, when you’re talking about somewhere in the middle of the ocean, or upon a fantastic river, then this type of coverage is usually unavailable.

That’s where satellite technology comes in. Marine sat phones are able to communicate with an orbiting satellite for connectivity. All that this technology requires is a clear view of the southern sky, and if you’re surrounded by miles and miles of sea, that’s not a problem. Sat phones allow you to communicate with a far more expansive range than is available with traditional phone companies. Most marine phones you will see on the market are large; about the size of ancient car phones. Along with your phone you will be using devices called a terminal and an antenna.

Can you use your satellite phone anywhere in the world? Not exactly, though potentially satellite TV could do this. The main restriction here is that satellite companies purposely limit their services to one region for better overall service and for legal purposes. For instance, in some countries it would be illegal for you to use marine satellite phones, because that might interfere with their local frequencies, which could result in confusion.

There will be major differences in price, anywhere from $200 to well over $2,000, depending on the phone’s features. Generally, the privileged-priced phones offer better reception at home and outdoors. The type of technology used in starting the connection could also play a part, such as in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) technology or geosynchronous orbit. The networks used for marine phones are built with a purpose and do not change over to innumerable networks like with cell phones.

In addition to enjoying satellite phones you can also request marine satellite Internet, which operates by the same technology. There’s no doubt that satellite Internet and marine satellite phones offer numerous advantages. You can keep appointments and can talks at will. You are also available for emergencies at all times. As for surfing the Internet on a boat? Now that’s a joy that cannot be fully articulated in just one article. To illustrate: could you submit a question to Yahoo answers about a boat while really on a boat? Yes. Blows your mind, huh?

Marine satellite phones are not for everyone, but if time is money for you then you can’t afford not to be without a satellite phone in this day and age.
